Bill Belichick isn’t hiding what changed in Chapel Hill this offseason: North Carolina went to work on its tight end room, and the overhaul was impossible to miss when he spoke with reporters last week.
That group was one of the clearest problems on a Tar Heels roster that unraveled last season. Tight end production in 2025 was basically a non-factor, and former starting quarterback Gio Lopez left the offense stuck in place. This time around, North Carolina attacked the issue through the transfer portal and brought in three new names - Colorado State transfer Jaxxon Warren, Ohio State transfer Jelani Thurman and Texas transfer Jordan Washington.
The result is a room that looks nothing like the one UNC rolled out a year ago. The Tar Heels now have three tight ends with different strengths, which gives Petrino more ways to shape the offense from week to week. With Petrino expected to lean on the run game in 2026, North Carolina is likely to spend plenty of time in 12 personnel.
Belichick pointed out that strong tight end play was a staple during his years in New England, and that standard was nowhere to be found last season. Warren, though, could be the piece that changes the conversation. The Colorado State transfer brings the kind of pass-catching upside that could make him a centerpiece in the passing game, and there’s a real case that he finishes the regular season as North Carolina’s second-leading receiver.
At the very least, the expectation is clear: this position group should produce far more than it did a year ago. Fall camp keeps rolling, and the rebuilt tight end room is one of the main reasons UNC looks different already.

North Carolinas football situation already has plenty of people talking, and college football analyst Josh Pate has only turned up the volume. Pate also floated a familiar name as a possible answer if UNC does decide to reset. Rece Verhoff is back in the fold for North Carolina, and it matters in the way special teams always seem to matter most when seasons tighten up. The Tar Heels officially announced that their leading scorer and place-kicker has been granted a fifth season of college eligibility after a U.S. District Court ruling, giving the program a proven leg who has already earned Honorable Mention All-ACC recognition and set a school record with a 57-yard field goal.
The timing is still a little murky, though, because the ruling is expected to be appealed by the NCAA, and the broader eligibility fight is not settled beyond Chapel Hill. Congress is also considering the Protect College Sports Act, but there is no waiver in place for this class, which leaves Verhoffs status tied to a larger debate even as UNC plans as if one of its most reliable players is available again.
