Still, the off-field situation around the program remains messy. A major human resources compliance investigation into internal conduct continues to hang over the athletic department, and the turmoil has already led to the official resignation of general manager Michael Lombardi. Defensive coordinator Steve Belichick is also away from the team on an extended medical leave.
Belichick said he understands the “importance of the work” investigators are doing.
