Bill Belichick’s first season at North Carolina opened with all the noise you’d expect from a major coaching arrival, but the latest read on Chapel Hill is a lot less glamorous: the clock may already be ticking.
The Tar Heels started their 2026 season in Dublin, Ireland against TCU, the same opponent that hammered them 48-14 in Belichick’s debut as UNC head coach last year. That 2025 season ended at 4-8, and the turbulence around the program hasn’t stayed on the field.
North Carolina football general manager Mike Lombardi was placed on administrative leave in July. Stephen Belichick, the team’s defensive coordinator, went on medical leave earlier this month and did not travel to Ireland.
On ESPN’s College Football Countdown, Booger McFarland said the situation in Chapel Hill leaves Belichick with little margin for error.
“They may be better, but to your point, the name of the game is winning games,” said McFarland. “If they don’t win games, what you said earlier could come true which is he may not make it to the end of the season.
It’s been a drastic shift in philosophy. Last year, 40 transfers.

That opener last year had a different feel entirely, with the big celebrity turnout and North Carolina jumping out to a 7-0 lead before everything unraveled. Now, the bar in Chapel Hill looks much lower. A .500 season and simply keeping the job could be viewed as a success for Belichick, and even that doesn’t sound like a comfortable bet right now.
