North Carolina’s football program heads into the 2026-27 season with plenty of uncertainty still hanging over Chapel Hill, and Bill Belichick sits right at the center of it.
The Tar Heels have made some solid offseason moves through the transfer portal and recruiting, but there are still a lot of questions around the program. Belichick, who arrived with massive attention and even more scrutiny, has become the biggest lightning rod in the picture.
That scrutiny only intensified after North Carolina’s 4-8 season, including a 2-6 mark in conference play. The Tar Heels missed bowl eligibility for the first time since 2018, a result that was clearly not what the program had in mind when it hired the longtime NFL coach.
Still, Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde placed Belichick at No. 8 on his list of the 25 most intriguing college football coaches entering the season. That ranking puts the 74-year-old ahead of several major names, including USC’s Lincoln Riley at 10, Notre Dame’s Marcus Freeman at 11, Oregon’s Dan Lanning at 12, Alabama’s Kalen DeBoer at 14, Georgia’s Kirby Smart at 15, Texas’ Steve Sarkisian at 20, and Ohio State’s Ryan Day at 21.
But the debate around Belichick isn’t really about his résumé. No one is arguing with the six Super Bowl titles.
The issue is whether his current college stint has earned that kind of placement. In this view, it hasn’t.
Belichick’s name still carries weight because of what he accomplished in the NFL, but his brief run in college football has not matched the hype. And beyond the hot-seat chatter, there’s not much else making him a must-watch figure in the sport right now.
College football is built around coaches who win, develop, and keep their teams in the national conversation. North Carolina hasn’t done that, and there’s a real possibility the Tar Heels fade from relevance quickly if the season goes sideways again.
Meanwhile, several of the coaches ranked behind Belichick have already built much stronger college résumés. Freeman, Lanning, and Smart are leading programs with national-title potential, while Riley and DeBoer have had uneven stretches of their own. Even so, the argument here is simple: until Belichick shows something more in Chapel Hill, his name value alone doesn’t make him one of the sport’s most compelling figures.
