A short clip spread quickly on social media showing Belichick crossing the grass at Aviva Stadium at halftime while an ESPN reporter with a microphone stepped into his path. He kept moving toward the tunnel.

The bigger story for UNC was what happened on the field. After last season’s 48-14 loss to TCU in Chapel Hill, the Tar Heels flipped the script in the rain and opened Year 2 with a 15-10 victory. The defense clamped down late, allowing nothing on TCU’s final eight drives.

That was about as friendly as the exchange got. Belichick had already shut down talk of an NFL return on Thursday, saying, “I’m focused on UNC right now absolutely.
I’ve recruited these kids, two years with them, been with these guys. I want to help them.”
The viral clip may have traveled faster than the box score, but Belichick’s first game of Year 2 ended the same way it started: with his defense doing the work.
