Belichicks Tar Heels Just Showed They Can Hang With The Best

Deck: Despite falling short against top-ranked Miami, UNC's football team showcased resilience and growth, hinting at promising potential for upcoming successes.

Nobody in Chapel Hill is hanging a banner for a loss, and Bill Belichick’s Tar Heels won’t pretend otherwise. But on Halloween night, North Carolina gave No. 1 Miami something it probably didn’t expect to get: a real fight.

The Hurricanes came into Kenan Stadium unbeaten, ranked first in the country and averaging 49 points and more than 550 yards of total offense per game. That kind of machine usually steamrolls teams that aren’t ready for the moment. UNC, after last week’s collapse against Syracuse, had plenty of reason to look like another stop on Miami’s march.

Instead, the Tar Heels kept answering.

Miami struck first on its opening drive, and for a moment it looked like the night could tilt the way so many people feared it would. But North Carolina didn’t fold.

Every time the Hurricanes tried to create separation, UNC found a way to stay attached. That doesn’t make the loss disappear, and it doesn’t hand out any moral victories.

Still, it says something real about where this team is right now.

This is not the same UNC team that Belichick inherited a year ago.

That first season in Chapel Hill was rough, with the Tar Heels finishing with only four wins and struggling to hang with better opponents. This group has looked far more competitive.

It beat TCU after getting crushed by the Horned Frogs on opening night a season ago. It knocked off a ranked Pitt team.

It beat Duke for the first time since 2023.

And even in the losses, UNC has usually been in the fight. The defeats to Clemson and Syracuse hurt because the Tar Heels could easily be sitting at 5-2 or 6-1 instead of 4-4. Add Saturday night to that list of games where UNC didn’t win but still showed it can stand in the ring with a heavyweight.

Could anyone honestly have said that about last year’s team? Heel no.

That’s why this one feels different. The Tar Heels weren’t intimidated by Miami, and they weren’t run out of their own stadium. They played meaningful football deep into the night against the best team in the country.

Of course, the next step is the one that matters most. Competing is one thing.

Finishing is another. North Carolina has now had multiple chances this season to turn close games into something bigger, and those chances have slipped away.

Belichick has the Tar Heels to the point where they can go toe-to-toe with elite teams. Now they have to learn how to beat them.

That’s what separates a team that’s merely improving from one that’s ready to matter.

UNC isn’t there yet. But it’s closer than it was.

And on Halloween night, against No. 1 Miami, that was impossible to miss.

Belichick Brings Another Off-Field Distraction To North Carolina

Bill Belichicks arrival in Chapel Hill has already brought plenty of attention, and now theres another layer to the off-field conversation around North Carolina. The pair has still been seen together publicly this year, which has only kept the spotlight on a relationship that drew notice in the first place because of their age difference. For the Tar Heels, it is another reminder that Belichicks presence is going to come with plenty of scrutiny beyond the football field. [Read more 🡒]

Philip Rivers Could Change The Carolina Rivalry In A Way Fans Hate

Philip Rivers has surfaced in the kind of rumor that instantly grabs attention across the Triangle, because the former NC State quarterback is now being linked to the Wolfpacks opening after Dave Doerens firing. Rivers is currently coaching at a high school in Alabama, and he has already acknowledged the chatter while making clear there is nothing concrete yet, but even the possibility is enough to stir up old memories and fresh debate.

For North Carolina fans, the idea carries an extra edge because Rivers is not just a former Wolfpack star, he is one of the most recognizable figures ever tied to the rivalry. The discussion has also brought up his connections to former teammates and what a hire like this could mean for NC States direction, but for now it remains exactly that, a conversation without an official decision. UNC Still Has One Big Roster Concern Before No. 1 Miami

North Carolinas Friday night availability report brought a little clarity ahead of its matchup with No. 1 Miami, and a little more uncertainty too. Five Tar Heels are still ruled out, while four others are listed as questionable, leaving the staff to sort through a roster picture that is still very much in flux as kickoff approaches.

There was one bit of good news for the Tar Heels, with defensive lineman Zavion Griffin-Haynes now considered available. Miami will also be short-handed, with six players out for the game, but the biggest update for UNC may still be coming later, when the final availability report is released two hours before kickoff.
