UNC and TCU open the 2026 college football season in a spotlight game far from Chapel Hill, with the Tar Heels and Horned Frogs meeting Saturday, Aug. 29, at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland.
Kickoff is set for Noon ET, and ESPN will carry the Aer Lingus College Football Classic. Fans can also stream the game on Fubo, which offers a free trial for new subscribers.
UNC comes in as a 7 ½-point underdog, trying to shake off a 4-8 season in 2025 as it begins its second year under Bill Belichick. The Tar Heels are bringing in 60 newcomers, and the biggest name among them is starting quarterback Billy Edwards Jr., who will run first-year offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino’s offense.
TCU is in a similar spot on the offensive side, with Harvard transfer Jaden Craig stepping in at quarterback and former UConn play-caller Gordon Sammis taking over as offensive coordinator.
Belichick is scheduled to speak Monday at 11 a.m. ET at the Kenan Football Center, and updates are expected to roll in through the week as UNC gets ready for the trip to Ireland.
One of the biggest questions hanging over this opener is simple: can UNC clean up the mistakes that tend to wreck season openers? There’s no escaping the chaos of Week 0, but turnovers can decide everything, and the Tar Heels will need Edwards and the offense to avoid the kind of back-breaking errors that can swing a game fast. UNC had three turnovers in the 2025 opener, while TCU scored two defensive touchdowns in that game.
The matchup to watch is UNC’s defense against Craig. TCU piled up 29 first downs, 542 yards and four touchdowns against the Tar Heels last season, and now Craig gets his first shot as QB1 against a Bill Belichick defense.
It will also be Craig’s first game against a Power Four opponent. With Sammis calling the offense, TCU will be sorting out a few moving parts, and UNC’s defensive continuity could matter.
There’s no official UNC injury report for this one, since ACC teams aren’t required to release availability reports for nonconference games. Belichick may offer updates during the week, and the rest will come from who’s seen in uniform at Aviva Stadium.
