Bill Belichick doesn’t hide how much he values the tight end spot, and he made it clear that North Carolina is trying to give him more of what he’s always wanted there.
The Tar Heels’ tight end room has been turned over, and Belichick said he likes what he sees from the new group. He pointed to the spring as a step forward and suggested the position already produced more than it did across the entire 2024 season.
"That room's been a total makeover," Belichick said, according to 247Sports. "It's a lot of new players, a lot of talented players.
"We had more production from those guys in the spring, than we had the entire year last year. It's a position Coach Bobby Petrino and I both crave."
Belichick also tied the position back to a broader football truth he’s leaned on throughout his coaching career.
"I've always had good tight ends," Belichick continued. "It's a very important position for our offense.
We weren't able to really get much production there last year. I hope that'll balance us out more this year.
Certainly those guys are off to a good start. Coach Caleb Pickrell has done a really good job with that group."
That emphasis makes sense coming from a coach whose NFL years were defined in part by getting the tight end involved, especially with Rob Gronkowski. North Carolina isn’t trying to find another Gronkowski, and nobody would expect that. But the Tar Heels do need much more from the position, and Belichick sounds confident that improvement is already underway.

Rece Verhoff is back in the fold for North Carolina, and it matters in the way special teams always seem to matter most when seasons tighten up. The Tar Heels officially announced that their leading scorer and place-kicker has been granted a fifth season of college eligibility after a U.S. District Court ruling, giving the program a proven leg who has already earned Honorable Mention All-ACC recognition and set a school record with a 57-yard field goal.
The timing is still a little murky, though, because the ruling is expected to be appealed by the NCAA, and the broader eligibility fight is not settled beyond Chapel Hill.
