Armando Bacots Next Move Gives Tar Heels Fans A New Reason To Care

College basketball star Armando Bacot channels his NIL earnings into entrepreneurship, with the opening of his first hotel marking a new chapter off the court.

Armando Bacot is taking the money he made in Chapel Hill and putting it to work in a different lane.

The former North Carolina star recently announced the opening of his first hotel, a Home2 Suites by Hilton near Raleigh’s Crabtree Valley Mall. Bacot is using part of his name, image and likeness licensing earnings to operate the business with the Atma Hotel Group.

Bacot said his NIL earnings at UNC topped $2 million, and now some of that money is being turned into something tangible off the court.

That business move comes after one of the most productive runs in program history. From 2019 to 2024, Bacot was a centerpiece for UNC basketball and finished as the school’s all-time leader in rebounds with 1,715, offensive rebounds with 593 and double-doubles with 87. He was also part of North Carolina’s 2022 national runner-up team and the 2024 Sweet 16 group.

On the professional side, Bacot’s path has already taken a few turns. He went undrafted in 2024, then spent time with the Utah Jazz during that year’s NBA Summer League, signed with the Memphis Grizzlies and later played for their G League affiliate, the Memphis Hustle, after being waived.

Bacot found success in the G League, enough to leave plenty of people thinking an NBA deal was coming next. Instead, he signed with Turkish club Fenerbahçe for the 2025-26 season, and he is now on a two-year deal in Israel with Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Even with his career still moving forward overseas, Bacot’s latest move shows the reach of those college earnings. Former teammate Seth Trimble also has his own business, owning the Ben and Jerry’s on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill.

For a player who gave UNC so much on the floor, seeing those college dollars turn into a hotel venture is a pretty notable next step.

UNC Quarterback Decision Just Changed The Tar Heels' Week 1 Outlook

North Carolina has settled its Week 1 quarterback question, and the move reshapes the Tar Heels opening path against TCU. What had looked like a competition with Miles O'Neill trending toward the job ended with the sixth-year transfer from Wisconsin getting the nod, giving UNC a clear starter heading into the opener and a little more clarity as camp winds down.

O'Neill is still in the mix as the backup, which keeps the depth chart from feeling fully closed off. If the starter struggles or gets benched, there is still a possibility of a different look under center, but for now the Tar Heels have made their first big decision of the fall and turned the focus to how the new quarterback handles a tough debut. Michael Malone Is Sending UNC Fans A Tough Early Message

Michael Malone is already setting the tone for his first season in Chapel Hill, and it is not the kind of message that sells instant gratification. The new North Carolina coach is talking about building this thing day by day, stressing daily improvement over the kind of championship talk Tar Heels fans are used to hearing. That approach makes sense for a program that has spent recent years searching for its footing, including the first-round tournament exit that helped trigger the coaching change.

Malones track record suggests there is real substance behind the patience. He has been successful on the recruiting trail, and North Carolina is expected to land strong talent in the 2027 class, which gives the long view some real teeth. For a fan base eager to see the Tar Heels back at the top, the early challenge is obvious: the new coach is promising progress first, with the bigger payoff still to come. [Read more 🡒]
