Yankees and Nationals Swap Prospects: Jorbit Vivas for Sean Paul Liñan
In a move that shows both teams are looking to fine-tune their rosters, the Yankees and Nationals have completed a trade that sees infielder Jorbit Vivas heading to Washington, while right-handed pitcher Sean Paul Liñan joins the Yankees.
Liñan, who has been making waves with a 3.03 ERA and a 3.22 FIP over 19 appearances, primarily uses his changeup to keep hitters off balance and induce ground balls. Though he had a brief stint in Triple-A, it seemed more of a strategic move to cover innings rather than a sign he was ready for the majors, given his limited experience above Double-A.
Ranked as the 27th prospect in the Nationals' system by MLB Pipeline, Liñan was originally acquired from the Dodgers in the Alex Call trade. At just 21, his pitching arsenal includes a solid changeup, a cutter, and a fastball, though the latter two lack standout velocity or movement. However, his low release point and impressive extension suggest he could develop into a valuable bullpen asset, especially if he adds some velocity.
On the flip side, the Yankees are sending Vivas, who was out of Minor League options and unlikely to make the Opening Day roster, to the Nationals. With Randal Grichuk already securing a spot on the Yankees' 26-man roster, alongside Amed Rosario, J.C.
Escarra, and Paul Goldschmidt, Vivas was facing a potential designation for assignment. Instead, the Yankees managed to acquire a promising pitching prospect in Liñan, rather than losing Vivas for nothing.
This trade is a strategic shuffle for both teams, allowing the Yankees to bolster their pitching depth while the Nationals add infield versatility. As the season unfolds, it will be interesting to see how these young players develop and contribute to their new teams.
