Yankees Make a Strategic Move Before Heading North
As the Yankees wrapped up their time in Florida, they executed a savvy trade, sending infielder Jorbit Vivas to the Nationals in exchange for pitching prospect Sean Paul Liñan. This move provides the Yankees with value for Vivas, who was out of minor league options and not slated for the Opening Day roster.
Vivas, a versatile infielder mainly playing second base, had a brief stint in the majors last season. In 29 games, he posted a .161 average with a .516 OPS, one homer, and five RBI. While he spent most of his time in Triple-A, where he had a .752 OPS over 100 games, his spring numbers didn’t do much to bolster his case for a spot, hitting .227 with a .643 OPS.
On the flip side, the Yankees gain Sean Paul Liñan, a promising 21-year-old right-hander. Last season, Liñan showcased his potential with a 3.03 ERA and 106 strikeouts over 77.1 innings, playing across three levels between the Nationals and Dodgers’ systems. He’s considered a rising talent, ranked as the Nationals’ 28th-best prospect by Baseball America.
Gerrit Cole’s Road to Recovery
Yankees fans got a final glimpse of Gerrit Cole in Tampa as he threw a bullpen session before the team’s game against the Phillies. Cole is in the midst of his Tommy John rehab and won’t join the team for the season-opening road trip. However, he aims to be ready for the home opener on April 3 after pitching two innings in Arizona on March 24.
Catching Depth with Ben Rice
Ben Rice made his spring debut behind the plate in the sixth inning of Sunday’s exhibition. While Rice is expected to be the primary first baseman, the Yankees are keen on keeping his catching skills sharp.
This is why they plan to have J.C. Escarra fill the backup catcher role, while Rice continues to work on his receiving in bullpens and live sessions.
Anthony Volpe’s Rehab Progress
Manager Aaron Boone provided an update on Anthony Volpe’s recovery from shoulder surgery. Volpe is set to begin live batting practice around April 1, with a rehab assignment likely starting in the second week of the month.
This timeline suggests he’ll need a full spring training to get back into game shape. Meanwhile, José Caballero will have an extended opportunity at shortstop in Volpe’s absence.
The Yankees are making strategic moves and adjustments as they prepare for the season, ensuring they have a well-rounded roster ready to compete.
