Yankees Stun Fans With Bold Roster Move Before Season Starts

Yankees Strategize Catcher Lineup Ahead of 2026 Season, Balancing Depth and Offensive Potential.

The New York Yankees are heading into the new season with a familiar look, keeping much of their roster intact from last year. However, there's a bit of intrigue surrounding the backup catcher role.

Manager Aaron Boone has revealed the team's plan to carry three catchers on the 26-man roster for Opening Day. Austin Wells is set to be the primary catcher, with JC Escarra backing him up.

Ben Rice will be the third option, stepping in only when necessary.

Boone explained, “We’re probably going to go with three catchers to start, for sure. Just because Ben hasn’t caught a ton yet.”

This suggests a strategic approach to managing the workload, especially considering Wells’ extensive experience from last season, where he started 112 games. Escarra, who started 24 games, is expected to see more action this year.

Ben Rice, while primarily focusing on his batting prowess, will remain the third-choice catcher. Boone noted that Rice is actively involved in bullpen sessions, catching for pitchers like Carlos Rodon.

“He has been catching sides and things. He’s catching Carlos Rodon’s live BP tomorrow,” Boone mentioned, highlighting Rice’s ongoing involvement.

Rice's versatility was evident last season as he played 138 games, including 46 starts at first base. His impressive .255/.337/.499 slash line, complemented by 26 home runs and a 131 OPS+, underscores his value as a left-handed slugger. The Yankees seem keen on maximizing his offensive contributions without overburdening him with catching duties.

As the season unfolds, it will be interesting to see how Boone and the Yankees navigate the dynamics of their catcher trio, especially with the potential for Rice to carve out a more defined role.
