Recovery from such an injury is rarely straightforward.
Last season, Cabrera managed a .243/.322/.308 line with an 83 wRC+ over 122 at-bats. While modest, these numbers hinted at his potential when healthy. However, returning to that form has proven more challenging than anticipated.
Grichuk's Veteran Presence
At 34, Randal Grichuk isn't exactly a headline-grabbing addition. His spring performance was underwhelming, with a .125/.125/.188 line and a -31 wRC+ over 16 plate appearances.
Yet, the Yankees aren't focusing on his spring stats. They're eyeing his career .819 OPS against left-handed pitchers and his ability to cover all three outfield positions.
His right-handed bat is a valuable asset for a lineup leaning heavily left.
With José Caballero stepping in at shortstop while Anthony Volpe recovers and Amed Rosario handling the backup infield duties, there simply wasn't a utility spot for Cabrera. The roster dynamics didn't favor him this time.
