Yankees Shuttle Reliever Back to Minors After Brief Stint

In a strategic roster shuffle, the Yankees demote Yerry De los Santos to Triple-A while ushering in Carlos Carrasco to strengthen their bullpen.

As the Yankees gear up for their series finale against the Los Angeles Dodgers, they've made a strategic roster shuffle, calling up veteran right-hander Carlos Carrasco. To make room on the roster, Yerry De los Santos has been optioned down to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. This move comes at a critical juncture as the Bronx Bombers aim to dodge their first series sweep of the season.

De los Santos has had an eventful stint with the Yankees so far. In his 10 appearances on the mound, he's sported a commendable 3.00 ERA, complementing it with a 3.09 FIP and a rather high 1.917 WHIP.

His journey with the Yankees began in November 2023, when he signed a minor league deal, after a long tenure in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. For those keeping track, De los Santos originally signed with the Pirates as an international free agent back in July 2014.

During his time with the Pirates, De los Santos was solid yet unspectacular, putting up a 4.14 ERA across 48 outings. His 2022 and 2023 campaigns saw him delivering 50 innings of work at the major league level. Last season, his consistency continued down in the minors, where he concluded with a 4.12 ERA and a 1.441 WHIP over 51 appearances totaling 59 innings.

In an effort to retain De los Santos and fend off free agency, the Yankees added him to their 40-man roster in November. Though he didn't crack the Opening Day crew, he managed to make his way up as the extra arm for a doubleheader against the Toronto Blue Jays on April 27, and later secured a spot on the 26-man roster by May 6.

The Yankees hope that this adjustment will bolster their pitching depth as they navigate the relentless grind of the MLB season. Carlos Carrasco’s experience and veteran presence offer a potential stabilizing force for their rotation, while De los Santos will look to continue honing his craft down in Triple-A, ready to answer the call whenever the team needs a fresh arm.
