The New York Yankees are looking to turn the page at shortstop, a position once synonymous with excellence thanks to Derek Jeter. Last season, the Yankees struggled mightily in this role, and it was a significant hurdle in their quest for success. But as the new season approaches, there's optimism in the air.
Buster Olney of ESPN reports that the Yankees are poised for improved shortstop performance in 2026. Given last year's challenges, there's plenty of room for growth.
Anthony Volpe, who had a tough 2025 with an OPS+ of 63 and defensive struggles, underwent surgery on his left shoulder to repair a partially torn labrum. He's expected back in the early months of the season.
In the meantime, Jose Caballero, acquired at last year's trade deadline, will step up to the plate. Caballero impressed with a 131 OPS+ and 15 stolen bases in just 40 games.
Manager Aaron Boone has praised Caballero's infectious energy, which could make him a fixture in the lineup even after Volpe's return.
But the plot thickens with George Lombard Jr., the Yankees' top prospect and the 26th pick in the 2023 draft. Known for his agility and strong arm, Lombard is seen by some evaluators as a potentially elite defender.
The question mark remains his hitting. Last season, at just 20 years old, he spent most of his time in Double-A Somerset, posting a .215/.337/.358 slash line after a stellar .329 in High-A.
Lombard is set to start this season in Double-A, but his rise could hinge on how Volpe and Caballero perform. The Yankees are eager to see better results from the shortstop position, and with these promising options, they just might find the answer they've been seeking.
