Yankees Shift Focus After Costly Bellinger Deal Limits Pitching Options

Despite a major splash with Cody Bellinger, the Yankees' rotation remains a question mark-and help may not be on the way.

The Yankees finally made their big splash this offseason, locking in Cody Bellinger on a $162.5 million deal - a move that checks off the top item on their winter wish list. It’s a significant addition for a team that’s been relatively quiet in the transaction column until now. But while the lineup just got a serious boost, questions remain on the other side of the ball - specifically, the rotation.

With lingering health concerns around Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodón, the expectation was that New York might look to reinforce its starting pitching depth. But according to the latest from MLB insider Mark Feinsand, that door may be closing faster than fans hoped.

Feinsand reports that while the Yankees had shown interest in Milwaukee’s Freddy Peralta, those conversations are now moot with Peralta off the board - traded elsewhere before the Yankees could make a move. More importantly, Feinsand notes that the Yankees are not expected to pursue any of the remaining free-agent starters. That includes names like Framber Valdez, Zac Gallen, Chris Bassitt, and Lucas Giolito - all arms that could’ve slotted in nicely behind Cole and Rodón.

That’s a tough pill to swallow for a fanbase that’s been waiting for the front office to address the rotation more aggressively. Without a new addition on the horizon, the Yankees are currently looking at a starting five that includes Max Fried, Cam Schlittler, Will Warren, Ryan Weathers, and Luis Gil - at least until Cole, Rodón, or Clarke Schmidt are fully healthy and ready to return.

Now, this isn’t a rotation without potential. Weathers, in particular, adds a new wrinkle with his upside, and Fried brings a steady veteran presence. But it’s hard to argue that the group wouldn’t benefit from one more proven arm, especially with the AL East shaping up to be as competitive as ever.

The Yankees’ interest in Peralta shows they were actively exploring ways to bolster the rotation. But with the New York Mets swooping in to land him, the Yankees are left without a clear plan B. And if they’re truly bowing out of the free-agent market, the trade route doesn’t offer many obvious solutions either.

One name that’s still floating out there is Luis Severino - now with the Athletics - but even that feels like a long shot given the current signals from the Yankees’ front office. MacKenzie Gore, another potential target, was just dealt to the Texas Rangers, further shrinking the pool of available arms.

So where does that leave the Yankees? For now, it looks like they’re rolling with what they have. Bellinger’s arrival gives the offense a much-needed jolt, but unless something changes, the rotation is going to have to hold the line - at least until Cole and Rodón are back to full strength.

For fans hoping Brian Cashman had one more move up his sleeve, this latest report is a reality check. The Yankees may be done shopping for starters this offseason.
