TAMPA, Fla. - As the New York Yankees gear up for the new season, there's a bit of uncertainty surrounding Luis Gil, the standout who clinched the 2024 American League Rookie of the Year Award. Despite his impressive credentials, Gil's spot on the Opening Day roster isn't guaranteed.
Yankees skipper Aaron Boone has opted for a four-man rotation to kick things off. Max Fried is set to take the mound on Opening Day, followed by Cam Schlittler, Will Warren, and Ryan Weathers. Given the Yankees' early schedule, they won't require a fifth starter until April 11.
So, where does that leave Gil? For now, he stays in Tampa, gearing up with a live batting practice session on Wednesday to maintain his pitch count at 85.
With a minor-league option still available, the Yankees might send him down for the first couple of weeks, potentially bringing him back into the fold by April 9. Another possibility is using Gil as a piggyback option for Weathers during their game against the Mariners in Seattle.
Gil's recent performance in spring training has been promising. He fanned seven batters over five innings against the Orioles, a showing that has the Yankees feeling optimistic about his adjustments.
Pitching coach Matt Blake noted the improvements in Gil’s fastball velocity and movement, key elements that the team has been focusing on. They've also introduced a sinker to his repertoire, adding a new dimension to his pitching arsenal.
The Yankees are committed to nurturing Gil's potential as a starting pitcher. Blake emphasized the importance of keeping Gil in rhythm while balancing the needs of the bullpen and the starting rotation.
Optioning Gil would also allow the Yankees to keep Rule 5 draft pick Cade Winquest, along with Brent Headrick and Jake Bird, in their bullpen as the season begins. For longer relief outings, Ryan Yarbrough and Paul Blackburn are in the mix as well.
While the Yankees have yet to finalize their bullpen strategy, the likely scenario involves optioning Gil, thereby retaining all three relievers on the roster. This approach reflects the Yankees' strategic planning as they aim to start the season strong while ensuring Gil continues his development.
