The problem is that a few players are making life harder than it needs to be, and they may be pitching themselves out of the team’s 2027 plans at the same time.
That kind of pressure comes with the territory in the Bronx. When October starts creeping closer, every bad at-bat and every rough inning gets magnified.
Yankees fans don’t wait around for patience, and if a player isn’t producing, they tend to let him hear it. For at least three guys on this roster, the closing weeks of the season are a last chance to change the story.
Heliot Ramos is one of them. New York brought him in at the trade deadline as a move that made some sense, especially with Aaron Judge in injury limbo and the lineup needing help.
But the fit has been rough. Ramos can still punish a baseball - his average exit velocity in 2026 sits at 92.3 MPH, which puts him among the league’s best - yet the rest of the package has fallen short.
He’s been beaten by whiffs and chase rates that sit near the bottom of the league, and injuries in the outfield have forced him into matchups against right-handers, where he has struggled. He’s not a bad player, but he hasn’t been a good fit either, and his defense hasn’t done enough to make up for the bat.
If the Yankees decide to reshape the roster in the offseason, he could be part of a trade package for a third baseman or pitcher. A big late hit in October could still change the conversation.
Ryan McMahon’s situation is different, but just as uncomfortable. He fought through a rough start and actually turned himself into a somewhat useful piece for a while.
Ten home runs from a corner infielder isn’t exactly what you draw up, but the Yankees could live with that if the glove stayed elite. Instead, the defense has slipped too, and the bat has gone cold again.
Since coming back from his recent IL stint, McMahon has posted a .165/.225/.189 slash line in 37 at-bats this month. That’s not the kind of production that inspires confidence with a potential three-game Wild Card Series against the Boston Red Sox looming.
He has one year left on his contract after this season and is owed $16 million next year, which makes any clean exit complicated. Even so, the Yankees may be ready to move on.
Tim Hill is the toughest name to place in this group because of what he’s meant to the team before. He’s been a quirky fan favorite since arriving in the Bronx in 2024, and he was one of the Yankees’ most valuable relievers down the stretch that season, helping them reach the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
But this year has gone in the opposite direction. Over his last 15.2 innings, Hill has given up 11 earned runs, and five of those came via home run.
The regression has been clear, and at this point he doesn’t look like a reliable option for Aaron Boone down the stretch. Hill is 36 and set to become a free agent after the season, so a return in 2027 feels unlikely.
He may not even crack the postseason roster.
