Yankees Make Sudden Pitching Cuts After Opening Weekend

Yankees shake up pitching roster, releasing four right-handers as they refine their team strategy post-opening weekend.

The New York Yankees are tidying up their roster as the 2026 MLB season kicks off. In a move to streamline their organization, they've released four right-handed pitchers who were set to join their minor league ranks.

The players released are Mason Vinyard, Cole Zaffiro, Gus Hughes, and Alexis Paulino. Each of these pitchers now finds themselves navigating the free agency waters.

Mason Vinyard, who joined the Yankees as an undrafted free agent, made a solid climb through the ranks, reaching Double-A Somerset last season with a 4.05 ERA. He also had a brief stint in Triple-A. At 26, Vinyard is considered a non-prospect, but his journey reflects determination and grit.

Cole Zaffiro, another undrafted talent, ended the 2025 season with a 4.42 ERA at Single-A Tampa. While his numbers weren't eye-popping, his journey in the minors is a testament to his perseverance.

Gus Hughes, an 18th-round pick in 2024, showed promise with a 3.80 ERA at Single-A Tampa last year. His performance might just earn him another opportunity elsewhere.

Alexis Paulino, meanwhile, remained in the Florida Complex League, not quite breaking through to the higher levels of the minors.

In addition to these releases, Ocean Gabonia has been placed on the 60-day Injured List after posting a respectable 3.27 ERA at high-A last season. His absence will be felt, but it opens the door for other pitchers to step up.

While these names might not be headliners in the MLB just yet, they represent a group of players ready to seize new opportunities and continue their baseball journeys.
