Yankees Legend Joins Team Italy for 2026 in Shocking New Role

A Bronx legend brings his championship pedigree to Team Italy as preparations ramp up for the 2026 World Baseball Classic.

Yankees fans have a fresh reason to circle the 2026 World Baseball Classic on their calendars - and it’s not just about the players.

Jorge Posada, the four-time World Series champion and longtime heart of the Yankees behind the plate, is stepping back into the baseball spotlight. He’s officially joined Team Italy’s coaching staff for the upcoming WBC, teaming up with former Yankees teammate and Italy’s current manager, Francisco Cervelli.

For fans who remember the chemistry Posada and Cervelli shared during their time in the Bronx, this reunion brings a nostalgic twist to the international stage. Cervelli, once Posada’s backup, now leads the Italian squad, and he’s brought in his old mentor to help guide the team. While Posada was born in Puerto Rico and doesn’t have Italian heritage, WBC rules allow for flexibility on coaching staffs - and Cervelli clearly wanted someone with championship pedigree in his corner.

As for the roster, there are still a few moving pieces. Former Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who recently announced his retirement from MLB, has received an invite to join Team Italy as a player. So far, he hasn’t made a decision, but his presence would be a major boost - both in the clubhouse and at the plate.

Current Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe, who does have Italian roots, won’t be suiting up for Italy this time around. He’s in recovery mode following offseason shoulder surgery and is focused on getting ready for the MLB season.

Italy’s roster is beginning to take shape, though. Kansas City Royals slugger Vinnie Pasquantino and two-way standout Jac Caglianone are already confirmed. And while not yet official, there’s chatter that Chicago White Sox catcher Kyle Teel could also be in the mix.

With Posada now in the dugout and familiar faces potentially on the field, Team Italy is shaping up to be one of the more intriguing squads in this year’s tournament. For Yankees fans, it’s a rare opportunity to see a beloved figure back in uniform - even if it’s not in pinstripes.
