The Yankees are making a notable change in the support system around Brian Cashman, parting ways with two veteran baseball minds who had been working behind the scenes in New York.
According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, the team will not renew the contracts of Omar Minaya and Brian Sabean, both of whom served as special assistants to the general manager. Heyman wrote, “The Yankees aren’t renewing the contracts Omar Minaya and Brian Sabean, who served as special assistants to GM Brian Cashman, via sources,”
Minaya and Sabean had been in the organization since January 2023, arriving just two days apart. Sabean’s hire was announced Jan. 3, 2023, and Minaya followed on Jan.
- Their exits now leave the Yankees without two experienced advisers who brought long scouting and front-office résumés to the table.
The pair came in with different backgrounds but similar value to the club’s baseball operations group. Minaya had run the Mets and Montreal Expos, and his career also included work with the Rangers, Mets, Expos and Padres, along with a stint as an MLB consultant on domestic and international amateur scouting. His time in Texas included helping discover Sammy Sosa and Iván Rodríguez.
Sabean brought a deep Yankees and Giants history. He worked in the Yankees organization from 1985 through 1992, moving from scout to scouting director and then vice president of player development and scouting. After that, he spent 30 seasons with the Giants and was the general manager during their World Series titles in 2010, 2012 and 2014.
The Yankees originally gave Minaya the title of senior adviser to baseball operations and Sabean the title of executive adviser to the general manager. Those roles placed both men in the orbit of the club’s baseball decision-making, even as Cashman remained in charge.
Heyman did not report a reason for the nonrenewals, and no replacements were named.
The move comes as the Yankees keep Cashman and manager Aaron Boone in place for the 2027 season. So while the top of the organization remains steady after another disappointing postseason exit, the advisory layer around baseball operations is being reshaped.
What the change means in practical terms is straightforward: the Yankees are losing two former general managers with traditional scouting backgrounds and decades of experience. Cashman will move into the offseason without that particular blend of perspective around him, and the next step will be seeing how the organization fills those advisory roles.

Yankees May Have A Much Louder Third Base Option Than Expected
The Yankees are still sorting through what third base is going to look like after their 2026 season, and the conversation is already getting interesting. Ryan McMahon gives them an established glove at the position, but the front office appears to be weighing whether there is a bigger swing out there, one that could change the shape of the lineup as much as the infield.
One route would be the Japanese slugger Sato, a fit that would bring a different kind of offensive upside but comes with its own questions about how he would mesh defensively and how much roster maneuvering it would require. Another possibility is far louder: a trade pursuit of Cincinnatis Elly De La Cruz, who has been floated as potentially available by a former Reds general manager. Either way, the Yankees are looking at a third-base decision that goes well beyond a simple upgrade, with cost, defense and overall roster impact all part of the equation. [Read more 🡒]
A-Rod Revealed What Shaped His Post-Yankees Second Act
Alex Rodrguez says one of the biggest influences on his post-playing career came from an unexpected place: Magic Johnson. In a recent interview, Rodrguez explained that Johnson urged him to keep baseball at the center of his public identity even as he began looking for life beyond the field, advice that helped shape the way he approached retirement after his Yankees days.
Rodrguez has followed that path ever since, building a second act that still leans on the game that made him famous. He has worked as a baseball commentator and branched into business ventures, using his sports background and network to stay visible in both baseball and the broader sports world. [Read more 🡒]
Yankees Infield Plans Could Get Complicated By One Phillies Prediction
The Yankees infield picture already has enough moving parts this winter, and one speculative Phillies forecast only adds another layer to the conversation. John Harper of SNY.tv has floated a scenario in which Philadelphia could pursue Jazz Chisholm Jr. in free agency, with Luis Arraez potentially headed to New York as part of the broader domino effect. It is all built on Harpers read of how the market could unfold, but it underscores how quickly the Yankees plans can get complicated when multiple clubs are eyeing the same corner of the roster.
From the Yankees perspective, the appeal is easy to see. Arraez would give them a different kind of infield profile, while Chisholm would bring power, speed and defensive flexibility to a Phillies lineup that Harper believes needs a jolt in 2026. None of it is set in stone, and the whole idea remains firmly in the realm of offseason speculation, but it is the sort of crossover possibility that can shape how New York approaches its own roster decisions if the market starts to tilt in unexpected directions.
