Caballero, on the other hand, posted an impressive .266/.372/.456 slash line, with three homers and 15 stolen bases. His defensive skills shone as he led all of baseball in stolen bases.
With the opportunity to start the season, Caballero commented, "That’s out of my control. I control what I can control.
I’m gonna go out there and do my best every day, and they make the decisions."
As Caballero gets his chance at shortstop, the Yankees' management, including Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman, continue to back Volpe. However, if Caballero delivers strong performances, it might be challenging to take him out of the lineup.
Last season, Caballero recorded a plus-five outs above average at shortstop, showcasing his versatility. This flexibility means the Yankees have multiple ways to keep him in the lineup, even if Volpe returns and improves his hitting. Third base could be an option for Caballero if Volpe reclaims shortstop.
Caballero has already made an impact this spring with a home run, and given last season's challenges for Volpe, the competition is wide open.
