Yankees Fans Will Hate Who Just Reentered A Familiar 3-0 Story

With Dave Roberts unique experience from a historic MLB comeback, the Dodgers hope to stave off elimination and rewrite playoff history.

Dave Roberts doesn’t have to be reminded what a 3-0 hole looks like. He’s lived the rarest kind of baseball miracle before, and now the Dodgers need one of their own.

Los Angeles is staring straight at elimination in the National League Championship Series. Win Game 4 against the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday night, or the defending champions are done. The Brewers have the Dodgers on the ropes and are one win away from knocking them out.

The odds are brutal. In MLB history, only one team has ever climbed out of a 3-0 deficit to win a playoff series: the 2004 Boston Red Sox against the New York Yankees in the ALCS.

That’s the mountain. Still, the Dodgers head into Game 4 as heavy favorites, with a chance to push the series back to Milwaukee.

And if anyone around the Dodgers understands how unlikely things can still flip, it’s Roberts.

He was part of that 2004 Red Sox team, and he played a central role in the turnaround. In Game 4 of the ALCS in Boston, with New York leading 4-3 in the top of the ninth and Mariano Rivera on the mound, Roberts came in as a pinch runner and stole second base.

He then scored the tying run on Bill Mueller’s single, and David Ortiz finished the night with a walk-off homer in the 12th inning. Boston won the next three games and completed the comeback.

Now, 22 years later, Roberts finds himself in a different kind of pressure cooker. This time he’s not running from first base. He’s trying to steer a team that has dropped three straight and is suddenly fighting just to survive.

The heat is on after Wednesday’s Game 3 collapse, when Roberts drew criticism for not pulling Blake Snell before the pitcher allowed back-to-back home runs that put the game away.

Still, Roberts has been here before, at least in the broadest sense. And when asked about the possibility of another comeback, he didn’t flinch.

“It’s certainly possible," Roberts said of coming back from the three-game deficit. "I’ve lived it.”

Anthony Volpes First Offseason Update After That Yankees Heartbreak

Anthony Volpes first offseason update arrived with the kind of contrast that tends to hit differently after a crushing October exit. After the Yankees were swept in the American League Division Series, the shortstop found himself tied to one of the defining moments of the elimination game against the Rays, when a potential tying home run was ruled fan interference and changed into an RBI double instead.

Away from that heartbreak, Volpes latest glimpse into the winter was a much lighter one. A social media post showed him with his girlfriend taking part in an infrared Pilates workout, a reminder that the offseason for players often mixes recovery, routine and a chance to step away from the noise of a lost season before the next one starts to build. Yankees Could Soon Face Another Coaching Decision Fans Should Watch

As the Yankees sort through another offseason of staff planning, one of the quieter priorities appears to be keeping Matt Blake in place. The pitching coach is reportedly under consideration for a new deal, and that comes as the organization also faces the possibility of outside interest in Tanner Swanson, the director of catching, as the Mariners rebuild their coaching staff.

Swanson has become a significant behind-the-scenes piece for the Yankees, with his work on the catching side drawing notice for helping develop players such as Austin Wells. He has not shown any eagerness to leave New York, but with Seattle looking around for staff additions, this is the sort of coaching-market wrinkle Yankees fans will want to monitor closely. Yankees Already Face A Ryan Weathers Decision They Never Expected

The Yankees are already sorting through the fallout of an early postseason exit, and Ryan Weathers has unexpectedly become part of that conversation. Acquired in January, the left-hander gave them 25 starts in 2026 and finished with a 5-8 record and a 3.60 ERA, enough to keep him in the mix as the club weighs how to rework a pitching staff that needs both stability and flexibility.

What makes Weathers interesting now is the role the Yankees might ask of him next. He has been viewed as a possible bullpen fit or even a trade piece, a reminder that New York is juggling rotation depth against the need to rebuild the relief corps, all while factoring in injury risk and the free-agent departures looming over the staff. The decision on Weathers may say as much about the Yankees pitching blueprint as it does about the pitcher himself. [Read more 🡒]
