Yankees Eyeing New Talent Amid Spring Training Shake-Up

Yankees Explore Right-Handed Options to Balance Left-Heavy Lineup as Season Nears.

Spring training is in full swing, but the Yankees are still eyeing roster tweaks, particularly in the outfield and behind the plate. With a lefty-heavy lineup, the Yankees are considering adding a right-handed-hitting outfielder or catcher. Names like Randal Grichuk, Austin Slater, and Chas McCormick have been floated, with Grichuk still available as a free agent, while Slater and McCormick are in camps with other clubs on minor league deals.

The Yankees' current lineup features a trio of right-handed hitters in Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and José Caballero. Meanwhile, the left-handed bats include Trent Grisham, Cody Bellinger, Ben Rice, Jazz Chisholm Jr., Ryan McMahon, and Austin Wells. To balance this out, Paul Goldschmidt and Amed Rosario, both righties, are projected to come off the bench, though Goldschmidt is limited to first base duties.

Jasson Domínguez and Oswaldo Cabrera, both switch-hitters, lean stronger from the left side. Domínguez, given his potential, might benefit more from regular playing time in the minors rather than a part-time role in the majors. Cabrera's status for Opening Day is uncertain due to recovery from ankle surgery, and both players could start the season in Triple-A.

The backup catcher spot is another area of interest. J.C.

Escarra, a lefty, currently holds that position but could be moved to Triple-A if a right-handed catcher is added. Christian Vázquez is a free agent option, though his career splits aren't particularly strong against lefties.

As Opening Day approaches, the Yankees might find additional options as players on minor league deals or fringe roster players become available. The Yankees' interest in Grichuk hasn't yet materialized into a deal, and both Slater and McCormick might soon be up for grabs.

Slater, who has opt-out clauses in his deal, could be free by March 21st if he doesn't make the Tigers' roster. McCormick, with a March 21st opt-out from his deal with the Cubs, faces stiff competition in Chicago's outfield.

The Yankees are clearly keeping their eyes peeled for the right opportunity to bolster their roster with some right-handed power, aiming to maintain a competitive edge as the season nears.
