Yankees Could Soon Face Another Coaching Decision Fans Should Watch

As the Yankees reassess their coaching staff amid off-season contract negotiations, the futures of key contributors like Matt Blake and Tanner Swanson hang in the balance.

The Yankees’ ALDS collapse has put the spotlight on change, and while most of the noise has centered on Aaron Boone, there’s another staff decision that matters just as much: what New York does with Tanner Swanson.

Pitching coach Matt Blake is the obvious priority, and the early read is that the Yankees want to keep him. But Swanson, the club’s director of catching, is also headed toward a crossroads. He’s not under contract beyond this season, and with other teams potentially circling, New York can’t afford to let him drift away.

Swanson’s name is already coming up elsewhere. He’s a Washington native, and the Mariners are in the middle of rebuilding their staff after firing manager Dan Wilson and moving on from several coaches, including bench coach Manny Acta.

On October 13, NY Daily News Sports’ Gary Phillips raised the possibility that Swanson could “be a fit for a promotion” on Seattle’s new staff. That question has not been limited to one reporter.

Tim Booth also wondered on October 1, 2026: “whispers I wonder if Tanner Swanson will get a look? Local connections.

For now, Swanson doesn’t sound eager to move on. He told Phillips, “I’m definitely not eager to leave,” and added, “I love this organization.” Still, that doesn’t guarantee anything if a bench coach job - or something bigger - lands in front of him.

The Yankees have plenty of reasons to want him back. Swanson has built a strong reputation around the league over six seasons in New York, and his work with Austin Wells has stood out.

Wells, a newly minted Gold Glove finalist, finished in the top five in both framing and successful ABS challenges this past season. He also ranked seventh in blocking.

That kind of growth matters. When Wells was working his way up through the Yankees’ system, plenty of people expected him to move off catcher eventually.

Swanson changed that conversation. He also helped develop other Yankees catchers who later became tradeable assets, including Jose Trevino, Carlos Narváez, and Ben Rortvedt.

If the Yankees are serious about keeping the best parts of their staff intact, Swanson belongs in the same category as Blake. There may be turnover after the ALDS loss, but those two shouldn’t be part of it.

Anthony Volpes First Offseason Update After That Yankees Heartbreak

Anthony Volpes first offseason update arrived with the kind of contrast that tends to hit differently after a crushing October exit. After the Yankees were swept in the American League Division Series, the shortstop found himself tied to one of the defining moments of the elimination game against the Rays, when a potential tying home run was ruled fan interference and changed into an RBI double instead.

Away from that heartbreak, Volpes latest glimpse into the winter was a much lighter one. A social media post showed him with his girlfriend taking part in an infrared Pilates workout, a reminder that the offseason for players often mixes recovery, routine and a chance to step away from the noise of a lost season before the next one starts to build. Yankees Already Face A Ryan Weathers Decision They Never Expected

The Yankees are already sorting through the fallout of an early postseason exit, and Ryan Weathers has unexpectedly become part of that conversation. Acquired in January, the left-hander gave them 25 starts in 2026 and finished with a 5-8 record and a 3.60 ERA, enough to keep him in the mix as the club weighs how to rework a pitching staff that needs both stability and flexibility.

What makes Weathers interesting now is the role the Yankees might ask of him next. He has been viewed as a possible bullpen fit or even a trade piece, a reminder that New York is juggling rotation depth against the need to rebuild the relief corps, all while factoring in injury risk and the free-agent departures looming over the staff. The decision on Weathers may say as much about the Yankees pitching blueprint as it does about the pitcher himself. [Read more 🡒]

Yankees Let Boone And Cashman Uncertainty Linger After Another Collapse

After another October letdown, the Yankees are leaving plenty of room for questions to hang in the air. The club was eliminated from the 2026 postseason after falling to the Rays in the ALCS, and the usual end-of-season routine has not followed, with Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman still not meeting with reporters for their customary wrap-up.

Boone has said he expects to be back in 2027, and Cashman has been supportive of him, but the lack of an official session has only added to the speculation around both mens futures. For a Yankees team trying to reset after another collapse, the silence is now part of the story, and it is one fans and media are watching closely. [Read more 🡒]
