Jazz Chisholm Jr. may be heading into free agency with plenty of attention on him, and one recent prediction sends him somewhere a lot of Yankees fans probably wouldn’t expect: Pittsburgh.
The New York Yankees have several free agents to sort through this offseason, but Chisholm stands out as the biggest name in the group. He just wrapped up a down year in New York, hitting 19 home runs with 55 RBI and a .231 average across 137 games.
Even so, his 2025 season showed exactly why he can draw a crowd on the open market. He made the All-Star team and posted 31 home runs, 31 stolen bases, and 80 RBI.
That kind of upside is why Chisholm is being linked to more than just the usual big-market suspects.
In a recent Bleacher Report piece, Kerry Miller projected that the Pittsburgh Pirates would sign Chisholm this offseason. It would be a major surprise on paper, since the Pirates are not known for splashing around in free agency.
But Miller’s logic tracks with where the club appears to be headed. Pittsburgh is on the rise, and with Paul Skenes anchoring the rotation, there is a clear case for adding a proven bat to the mix.
Chisholm would fit that need in a hurry. He could give the Pirates another dangerous presence near the top of the order, especially if he finds the same form he showed in 2025.
There is also a second layer to the fit. If Pittsburgh can’t bring back fellow second baseman Brandon Lowe, Chisholm would give them a strong replacement option as they sort out their infield plans this winter.

Yankees Deadline Misfire Puts Brian Cashman Under Fresh Scrutiny
At the August 3 trade deadline, the Yankees moved prospects Henry Lalane and Kaeden Kent to bring in Heliot Ramos from the Giants, a bet that was supposed to help stabilize an outfield that had been thinned by injuries. The move fit the urgency of the moment, and for a stretch it looked like the kind of aggressive deadline addition the front office likes to make when the roster needs immediate help.
What has followed is a more uncomfortable evaluation of the deal itself. Ramos underperformed after the trade and had only a limited role in the postseason, leaving the Yankees to weigh what they gave up against what they actually got back. In a market where every deadline move gets revisited once the games get bigger, this one has put Brian Cashman and the front office under fresh scrutiny. [Read more 🡒]
Yankees Outfield Debate Starts With One Big Steven Kwan Question
The Yankees are already being pushed toward roster upgrades after their ALDS loss, and the early conversation has turned to the outfield. Steven Kwan has surfaced in the rumor mill as a name worth tracking, but the fit is not as clean as it might first appear for a club trying to reshape its offense without creating new problems elsewhere.
Scouts who have looked at the market think Jacob Young of the Nationals could make more sense for New Yorks center field search. The appeal is tied to the Yankees broader need to balance lineup improvement with defensive stability, and that is where the Kwan discussion starts to lose traction for them, even if his name will likely keep popping up as the offseason chatter builds. Will Warren Could Be Matt Blake's Next Big Yankees Decision
Matt Blake is sticking around to keep shaping the Yankees pitching staff, and that brings the focus back to one of the organizations more interesting arms in Will Warren. Since arriving in 2020, Blake has earned a reputation for getting more out of pitchers the Yankees have either reclaimed or developed in-house, and that has made his next round of choices worth watching. Warren fits neatly into that conversation, because his progress now has to be weighed against how the club wants to use him moving forward.
For a pitcher like Warren, the question is no longer just about raw stuff or promise. It is about how Blake and the Yankees decide to deploy him, and whether his current path is the one that best helps both player and team. With Blake now locked in on a three-year deal, the staffs direction feels more established, which only adds importance to the decisions waiting ahead for a young pitcher trying to carve out his place.
