The New York Yankees, known for their offseason splashes, took a more measured approach this year. While they didn't make the headline-grabbing moves of past seasons, they still made strategic decisions to bolster their roster.
Key among these moves was retaining Cody Bellinger and Trent Grisham. However, the most intriguing addition came via a trade with the Miami Marlins for right-handed pitcher Ryan Weathers. This acquisition is particularly timely, as the Yankees face early-season challenges with their starting rotation.
With Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon sidelined-Cole recovering from Tommy John surgery and Rodon from elbow surgery-the Yankees needed reinforcements. Cole is expected back between late May and early June, while Rodon might return by late April or early May. In the meantime, Weathers is set to play a crucial role in the rotation.
ESPN's Kiley McDaniel highlights Weathers as a promising addition. Despite a rocky start in the big leagues, Weathers has shown significant improvement this spring, making him one to watch. But he’s not the only pitcher drawing attention.
Carlos Lagrange, another promising arm, is also on McDaniel's radar. Ranked as the No. 159 overall prospect, Lagrange impressed last year with a fastball averaging 98 mph. This spring, he's upped the ante, consistently hitting 100 mph.
Both Weathers and Lagrange bring the heat and could be pivotal for the Yankees as they aim to stay competitive. With these potential breakout candidates, the Yankees' pitching staff might just have the depth needed to weather the early-season storm.
