The Yankees keep finding ways to stack wins, even with the injury list growing around them.
New York opened its four-game set in Chicago with a 9-5 victory Monday night, and that puts the club in position to lock up at least a split Tuesday. The win was the Yankees’ fourth in their last five games, trimming their gap behind Tampa Bay in the American League East to 2 1/2 games.
New York was 3 1/2 games up on June 17, but has gone 15-18 since then. Over that same stretch, the Rays are 20-13.
“I feel like we just want to pick up our teammates, you know,” Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. said. “We just want to keep on going.
And when someone is down, we want to just keep on picking them up. Just keep on working.”
Chisholm was a big part of Monday’s push, finishing with two hits, two RBIs and two runs. He also was aboard when catcher Ali Sanchez delivered the swing that really cracked the game open: a three-run homer in the eighth inning, the first home run of Sanchez’s major league career.
Sanchez made his big-league debut in 2020 and has already been with six teams, never playing more than 31 games in a season.
“It’s always great when you get to see a teammate do well,” Chisholm said. “Especially when it’s their first career hit or home run. Especially the grind that he’s been through, man.”
Chicago had the early edge, jumping ahead 3-0 in the first inning, but couldn’t hold it. Colson Montgomery did his part with three hits and two RBIs, though the White Sox couldn’t back it up enough to finish the job.
Montgomery was the designated hitter Monday, but he’s expected to move back to shortstop during the series. He’s dealing with a bruised shin that kept him out of Sunday’s win over Houston.
The loss left Chicago with just one win in the first four games of its seven-game homestand. Even so, the White Sox still sit atop the AL Central by two games over the Cleveland Guardians. Monday also dropped them to 1-3 against the Yankees this season.
Defense hurt Chicago throughout the night. Third baseman Miguel Vargas, catcher Edgar Quero and reliever Sean Newcomb each committed errors, and manager Will Venable didn’t sugarcoat the mess afterward.
“It was a sloppy game defensively,” Chicago manager Will Venable said afterward. “Even some plays that didn’t end in errors, you know.
Just not sharp there. I thought it really impacted the game, obviously, and it really was the difference there.
So we’ve got to keep it up, go to work tomorrow and be better next time.”
Tuesday’s pitching matchup sends left-hander Anthony Kay (7-4, 4.21 ERA) to the mound for Chicago against Yankees right-hander Gerrit Cole (3-5, 3.92).
Kay picked up his first win since June 12 on Wednesday, working five innings of two-run, five-hit ball in a 4-2 victory over Texas. He walked two and struck out four.
The Yankees handled him on June 17, scoring 10 runs and tagging him for six hits in four innings. Cody Bellinger hit a two-run homer in that game.
Kay has made five career appearances, including two starts, against New York and owns an 8.10 ERA in those outings. He has given up 12 runs in 13 1/3 innings.
Cole beat Chicago 12-2 on June 16, allowing two runs and three hits over six innings while walking two and striking out six. Andrew Benintendi hit a solo home run in that start.
Cole is 4-2 with a 3.99 ERA in six career starts against the White Sox. He comes in after a no-decision Wednesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates, when he gave up three runs and four hits in seven innings, walked none and struck out a season-high 11.
