The Yankees may have handed the Red Sox exactly the kind of bulletin-board material teams love this time of year.
With Boston and New York set to open a three-game wild-card series Tuesday at Yankee Stadium, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported Sunday that the Yankees are expected to go with Max Fried in Game 1 and Cam Schlittler in Game 2. That setup would also leave Schlittler available for Games 2 and 5 in a potential ALDS series against the Tampa Bay Rays.
“The Yankees are expected to start Max Fried in Game 1 and Cy Young favorite Cam Schlittler in Game 2 of the wild-card series against the Red Sox, which still allows Schlittler to pitch Games 2 and 5 in a potential ALDS,” Nightengale wrote.
It’s a clear sign New York is thinking beyond the first round. And that’s where the Red Sox can lean in. In a short series, every move gets magnified, and choosing to hold back the likely Cy Young Award winner for later could be read as confidence, or overconfidence, depending on how Game 1 goes.
Fried is no slouch. He has a 2.80 ERA in 20 starts this season, and the left-hander is a tough matchup for Boston’s lineup.
But Schlittler has been the more dominant arm. He’s posted a 1.95 ERA in 33 starts and led the league with 7.1 wins above replacement.
That’s why this decision stands out. The Yankees are preserving their ace of the future for a possible next round, even though one bad night in a three-game series can end everything. If Boston takes Game 1, suddenly the whole plan looks shaky and New York would be asking Schlittler to rescue its season.
The setup also comes at a time when neither club is at full strength. Both teams are leaning on pitching, but injuries have dented the offenses. The Yankees are without Aaron Judge, while Willson Contreras is up in the air for Boston.
So while New York may be making a forward-looking pitching decision, the Red Sox have every reason to see it as fuel. Boston has a real shot to get through the wild-card round, especially if Judge remains out, and the Yankees’ choice to prioritize a potential ALDS over Game 1 only adds to the stakes.

Yankees Face A Brutal Center Field Call At The Worst Time
The Yankees are staring at one of those October roster decisions that can tilt a short series before the first pitch is even thrown. With multiple outfielders working back from injury, Aaron Boone has to weigh offense, defense and experience at the same time, all while trying to line up a Wild Card Series roster that makes sense on both sides of the ball.
Spencer Jones has put himself into the conversation as a possible starter in center field, thanks in part to his strong work against left-handed pitching. The issue is that the rookie comes with defensive questions, and in a postseason setting there is very little margin for a mistake, which is why Boones balancing act could end up being one of the most important choices the Yankees make this week. Yankees Added A Familiar Red Sox Twist To This Playoff Roster
The Yankees and Red Sox have set their rosters for the American League wild-card series, and one of the more familiar names on New Yorks side is John Schreiber. The right-hander, who once pitched for Boston, was claimed off waivers by the Yankees and is on the playoff roster as the rivalry shifts back to Yankee Stadium.
It adds another layer to a matchup that has long been defined by movement between the two clubs, with several players on both sides having spent time in both uniforms. In a series where every decision gets magnified, the Yankees will lean on a roster that carries some added history along with the usual October pressure. [Read more 🡒]
A-Rods Latest October Promo Got Upstaged By A Brutal Family Comment
Alex Rodriguez is leaning back into the October spotlight as FOX Sports gears up for its MLB postseason coverage, and he did it with a promotional push that paired him with David Ortiz in an AI-generated video. The clip was meant to sell the networks baseball presence, but it also doubled as another reminder that Rodriguez remains a familiar face in the sports biggest month, especially with FOX planning a studio group built around him, Ortiz, Derek Jeter and Kevin Burkhardt for the 2026 season.
Natasha Rodriguez had other ideas about how the post should land. Her comment on the video cut through the marketing polish by calling out the fact that the clip was AI-generated, a blunt family-level reality check that upstaged the promo itself. For FOX, the bigger picture still points toward a heavyweight October presence, but Rodriguezs latest social-media moment showed how quickly the conversation can shift when the audience includes people who know the star beyond the broadcast booth.
