The Red Sox will have to wait a little longer for Roman Anthony, Trevor Story and Isiah Kiner-Falefa.
Boston will open its four-game set against the Yankees on Friday night without Anthony or Story, and Friday no longer appears to be a realistic return date for either player. Triple-A Worcester acting manager Iggy Suarez said on Friday that the three rehabbers are scheduled to be in Worcester again on Saturday, according to Tommy Cassell of Worcester T&G Sports.
“WooSox acting manager Iggy Suarez just said all three Red Sox rehabbers - Roman Anthony, Isaiah Kiner-Falefa and Trevor Story - are scheduled to 'be here' in Worcester tomorrow,” Cassell wrote.
That would push their timeline back even further. If Anthony, Story and Kiner-Falefa are indeed still in Worcester on Saturday, they would miss the doubleheader as well, leaving Sunday as the earliest possible return to the big-league club.
Anthony’s own comments on Thursday made a Friday call-up feel less likely. He said he’s making progress at the plate, but still isn’t quite where he wants to be.
“I’m getting more and more at bats, I’m getting to where I want to be at the plate," Anthony said. "Am I quite there yet?
Probably not. I’m getting close to where I want to be.
And like I said, I’ll be ready when the time is right.”
That leaves the Red Sox and their fans in another waiting game, with the anticipation around Anthony, Story and Kiner-Falefa still running high. The expectation now is that the next checkpoint is Sunday, not Friday and probably not Saturday either.
