The Miami Marlins used the No. 14 pick in the 2026 MLB Draft on an 18-year-old shortstop with big-time tools and a familiar last name: Jacob Lombard.
Lombard comes out of high school as a right-handed hitter with 65-grade run and 60-grade power, giving Miami a player who brings both speed and pop to the table. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported the selection, and also pointed out the family connection that makes this one stand out even more. Jacob is the younger brother of Yankees infield prospect George Lombard Jr. and the son of Detroit Tigers bench coach George Lombard.
“Jacob Lombard, the brother of Yankees' prized prospect George Lombard Jr. and the son of Tigers bench coach George Lombard, is drafted by the Marlins,” Nightengale reports.
There’s also a strong talent case here beyond the storyline. MLB Pipeline ranked Lombard as the No. 5 prospect in the 2026 class, so Miami landed him four spots later than where he was slotted among the best players available.
That makes this more than just a neat family note. The Marlins appear to have added a shortstop prospect with real upside, even if he’ll need time before he’s ready for the majors. If he develops the way his tools suggest he can, this could end up looking like a sharp value pick.
And it comes during a strong season for Miami, which is 3.0 games behind the Atlanta Braves for first place in the NL East.

Andy Pettittes Son Suddenly Faces A Career Path Nobody Saw Coming
Luke Pettittes baseball path has taken a sharp turn at Dallas Baptist University, where the son of former Yankees left-hander Andy Pettitte had to reinvent himself after being unable to pitch during his sophomore season. What started as a setback on the mound pushed him into a new role at the plate, and he made the most of it as a designated hitter, giving scouts a very different version of the player they came to see.
Now Pettitte is drawing attention for a future that could go several ways, with some clubs looking at him as a pitcher and others imagining a bat-first profile or even a two-way path. His draft stock is being discussed across a wide range, which only adds to the intrigue around a player whose next step is still very much up in the air. [Read more 🡒]
Yankees May Finally Make The Infield Move Fans Have Feared
The Yankees infield picture has been unsettled for a while, and it is only getting more complicated. Jazz Chisholm Jr. is nearing free agency, while Anthony Volpe and Jose Caballero have been splitting time at shortstop, leaving the club with no clear long-term answer at two premium spots.
So it is no surprise that Corey Seager has surfaced as a possible target from Texas. His current production has not matched the standard he set earlier in his career, but the underlying numbers suggest there may still be a rebound ahead, and his long-term contract through 2031 would give New York a more stable fix if it decides to make a bold move. Yankees Suddenly Face A Tough Call With Cam Schlittler
Cam Schlittler has become one of the more intriguing names attached to the All-Star Game in Philadelphia, and not just because of what he has done on the mound for the Yankees. The right-hander owns the best ERA in the American League, and after a first half that has put him on the leagues biggest stage, he has already had conversations with coaches about whether he should take part in the midsummer showcase.
The decision is still hanging in the balance, though, and Schlittler wants to see how he feels after his final first-half start before making a call. The Yankees and AL manager John Schneider have not settled on a plan, which leaves open the possibility that a pitcher who has carried a heavy load for New York could wind up with an even bigger assignment in Philadelphia, depending on how the next few days unfold.
