The New York Yankees are gearing up for the 2026 season with hopes of rebounding after last year's ALDS exit against the Toronto Blue Jays. The 2025 season marked the first time in decades that the Yankees were without the legendary voice of John Sterling, who retired in 2024.
In a recent update, the 87-year-old Sterling shared some concerning news about his health. He disclosed, “For people who don't know - there isn't any reason to hide it - at the beginning of January, I had a heart attack, and that's fine, the heart is fine.”
Sterling explained that while his heart is in good shape, he’s experiencing issues with his legs. Despite these challenges, he remains optimistic about his recovery, expressing gratitude for his current state.
Sterling’s career as the Yankees' radio announcer began in 1989 and continued through 2024. Even after retiring in April of that year, he made a comeback for the Yankees' postseason, which saw them advance to the World Series before falling to the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games. Sterling’s voice has become synonymous with Yankees baseball, narrating countless memorable moments and several World Series victories.
It's reassuring to hear that Sterling is on the road to recovery and speaking openly about his experience. Meanwhile, the Yankees are in the midst of spring training, preparing to kick off their 2026 MLB season in late March. The team is eager to break their championship drought and make a strong push this year.
