Jazz Chisholm Jr. Stuns With Bold Contract Demand Ahead of Free Agency

Aiming for a historic contract, Jazz Chisholm Jr. sets his sights on a $35 million annual salary without a hometown discount, redefining expectations for top free-agent second basemen.

Jazz Chisholm Jr., the dynamic second baseman for the New York Yankees, is setting his sights high for 2026. With ambitions of becoming a 10-WAR player, Chisholm is also eyeing a contract that reflects his aspirations.

The two-time All-Star, soon to be a free agent, has made it clear he’s aiming for a significant payday next winter. When asked about the terms he’s seeking, Chisholm mentioned he’s looking for a long-term deal averaging $35 million per season, a step up from his previous target of $300 million.

At 28, Chisholm is thinking big. "I want 8-10 years," he stated, which would position him as the highest-paid second baseman in MLB history, surpassing Robinson Canó's landmark deal from 2014.

Chisholm, set to earn $10.2 million in 2026, stands out as arguably the top second baseman available in the upcoming free agency. He could face competition from the likes of Nico Hoerner, Gleyber Torres, Brandon Lowe, Luis Arraez, and possibly Ozzie Albies, depending on the Braves' decision regarding his club option. Bo Bichette, who’s transitioning to third base, might also enter the market if he opts out of his current deal.

Despite his affinity for the Yankees, Chisholm isn’t planning on any discounts for his current team. He’s clear about his value and won’t hesitate to explore other options if New York doesn’t meet his expectations. "I'd say no (to a $25 million AAV) because I know I can get $35 million somewhere else," he confidently stated.

Interestingly, Chisholm has no interest in joining the Los Angeles Dodgers, despite their recent successes and big spending habits. "I'd go to the (Los Angeles) Angels before I'd go to the Dodgers," he remarked, emphasizing his desire to forge his own path rather than join a powerhouse team.

Since joining the Yankees from the Miami Marlins in mid-2024, Chisholm has been instrumental in their playoff runs. Last season, he earned a Silver Slugger with a .813 OPS and achieved his first 30-30 season. However, his defensive game has room for improvement, as he led second basemen with 12 errors.

Chisholm’s journey and ambitions are setting the stage for an intriguing offseason, as he looks to secure a deal that matches his lofty goals.
