Jazz Chisholm Jr. Open to Extension Talks Yet Awaits Yankees' Move

As Jazz Chisholm Jr. considers his future with the Yankees, the team's approach to extensions and emerging infield talent could shape pivotal decisions across the AL East this season.

Yankees fans, keep an eye on Jazz Chisholm Jr. as he enters his final year under club control. The talented second baseman has expressed his willingness to engage in contract extension talks, but so far, the Yankees haven't made a move. This isn't the first time Chisholm has shown interest in staying put, yet the club seems to be taking a wait-and-see approach.

With spring training underway, it's a prime time for extension discussions, yet there's no buzz around Chisholm's future with the team. The Yankees historically shy away from extensions, possibly waiting to see how their middle infield shapes up.

Prospects like George Lombard Jr. could soon join Anthony Volpe and José Caballero, which might influence the Yankees' plans for Chisholm. If they can fill the infield internally, the Yankees might allocate their resources elsewhere next winter.

Otherwise, Chisholm could find himself back on their radar as a free agent.

Turning our attention to the Rays, Richie Palacios is set to expand his defensive repertoire this spring. Known primarily as a second baseman and outfielder, Palacios will get some reps at third base.

With only ten innings of experience at the hot corner back in 2024, adding versatility could help him secure a bench spot. Although Junior Caminero is the regular third baseman, his defensive metrics suggest Palacios might see time as a late-game defensive replacement or designated hitter.

Over in Boston, the Red Sox are experimenting with Isiah Kiner-Falefa at first base during spring training. While Kiner-Falefa has played nearly every position on the field, first base is uncharted territory for him.

With Willson Contreras as the primary first baseman, injuries to Triston Casas and Romy González have left the depth chart a bit thin. Kiner-Falefa's versatility and speed could also make him a valuable pinch-runner for Contreras.

Meanwhile, the Blue Jays have some promising news regarding Shane Bieber. Manager John Schneider shared that Bieber is progressing well, throwing from 120 feet and potentially returning to the mound in a couple of weeks.

Although Bieber is expected to start the season on the injured list due to forearm fatigue, the Jays have the depth to ease him back slowly. A healthy Bieber would bolster a rotation featuring Dylan Cease, Trey Yesavage, and Kevin Gausman, with Cody Ponce and Jose Berrios rounding out the current lineup.

As the season approaches, these developments across the A.L. East are sure to keep fans engaged and eager for what's to come.
