Back in 2022, Oswald Peraza was a standout in the New York Yankees' farm system, ranked as their No. 2 prospect. However, his path was blocked by Anthony Volpe, another promising talent playing the same position. Despite being a consensus top-100 prospect in baseball, Peraza found himself overshadowed in New York, where Volpe was always seen as the future at shortstop.
Peraza's stint with the Yankees didn't pan out as hoped. He struggled to capitalize on his opportunities and was eventually traded to the Los Angeles Angels at last year's deadline.
His performance with the Angels was a slight improvement, batting .186/.245/.267, compared to his .152/.212/.241 line with the Yankees. Despite a wide-open chance to claim the Yankees' third base spot, he couldn't seize it.
Fast forward to this spring, and Peraza seems to have turned a corner. Over 17 games, the 25-year-old has been impressive, posting a .314/.352/.549 slash line, with two homers and six steals. It's a promising turnaround that suggests he might be leaving his New York struggles behind.
Peraza's spring success isn't entirely new. When he first debuted in 2022, he showed potential with a .306/.404/.429 line over 18 games.
But small sample sizes can be deceiving, and his trajectory since then has been rocky. He's become emblematic of the Yankees' tendency to hold onto prospects whose value diminishes over time, making any flashes of success bittersweet for the fans.
Now, Peraza has earned a spot on the Angels' Opening Day roster. Yet, securing a starting role isn't guaranteed, as he's in competition with veteran Adam Frazier for the second base job. Angels' manager Kurt Suzuki has hinted at a potential timeshare, leaving Peraza's role somewhat uncertain.
While his spring stats are encouraging, they don't guarantee long-term success. Peraza will need to maintain this level of play to truly solidify his place.
For Yankees fans, his journey is a mix of frustration and hope. Many have a soft spot for Peraza due to the challenges he faced, but his past struggles make it hard to fully believe in his resurgence until it's sustained.
We wish him well, but only time will tell if this is the start of a lasting breakthrough.
