The San Diego Padres may not be done making noise before the MLB trade deadline, and one of the more intriguing names in the mix is a starter who has quietly put together a strong season.
According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Padres could trade former New York Yankees right-hander Michael King, who is on a $17 million one-year contract and has posted a 3.24 ERA this season. Nightengale wrote, "The San Diego Padres likely will keep closer Mason Miller but could trade starter Michael King, according to rival executives who have spoken to AJ Preller, president of baseball operations," Nightengale writes.
That makes King a much more realistic trade candidate than he seemed before. The Padres have other arms who could draw interest too, including relievers Jason Adam and Adrian Morejon, but King stands out because of both his performance and his contract situation.
He is under contract for $17 million this season and has player options for 2027 and 2028. Still, with the way he has pitched, there is a chance he could turn those options down and reach free agency after 2026.
If San Diego decides to move some of its expiring pieces, King fits the profile. He may not be guaranteed to leave after 2026, but he is the kind of pitcher who could make sense as a trade chip this summer, especially with so many teams around the league looking for starting pitching.
The Padres would also have a real chance to bring back a solid return if they deal him before the August 3 deadline. Nightengale only said King "could" be traded, but that possibility is now very much on the table.
With the Padres’ stars not producing at the level they need and too many holes on the roster to call this team a true World Series contender, AJ Preller could decide to cut ties with players who can hit free agency after 2026. King, with his 3.24 ERA in 21 starts, would be one of the most appealing names available.
