Plaxico Burress didn’t leave much room for interpretation when he talked about his time with the New York Jets.
Appearing on Lil Wayne and Craig Carton’s “The Joint Venture Show,” the Super Bowl champion drew a harsh comparison between playing for the Jets and serving prison time. Burress, who spent nearly two years behind bars after a 2008 gun charge, said the feeling he had on his first day in prison was the same one he carried every day he walked into the Jets facility.
“So, they’re both kind of similar because when I walked into prison my first day, I was like, ‘Damn man you a f-ing loser,” Burress said. “And I had the same damn feeling every day I walked through the door with the Jets.
I was like, ‘Damn I hope we can win this weekend.’ Loser!”
The line spread quickly online, especially because Burress signed with the Jets in 2011, only months after his release, with the hope that a fresh start would help revive his career. But the reaction wasn’t just about the quote itself.
Some fans were quick to note that the Jets had come into that season after back-to-back AFC Championship appearances under Rex Ryan, and they finished 8-8. Burress also put up a respectable season, catching 45 passes for 612 yards and eight touchdowns in 16 starts.
Burress has long been known for speaking without a filter, and this latest comment fits that reputation. He’s been candid before about the rougher chapters of his life, including the nightclub shooting that ended his Giants run and the financial problems that followed his playing career.
Even with all of that, his football legacy still comes back to one play: the game-winning touchdown against the undefeated Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. That moment remains the defining image of his career, no matter how miserable he says the Jets years felt.
