The Detroit Tigers may have a decision to make at second base this offseason, and it could send Gleyber Torres elsewhere.
Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter is predicting the Tigers will let the former New York Yankees All-Star infielder walk in free agency. He labeled Detroit’s outlook on Torres with a simple verdict: “Detroit Tigers: 2B Gleyber Torres (Age: 29). Verdict: Walk,”
That outcome would not exactly come out of nowhere. Reuter pointed to two young players who are pushing hard for bigger roles: Hao-Yu Lee and Max Anderson.
“Hao-Yu Lee (114 G, 107 OPS+, 31 XBH, 1.0 WAR) put together a strong rookie season, while Max Anderson (108 G, .302 BA, .863 OPS at Triple-A) is knocking on the door,” Reuter writes.
That kind of depth changes the picture fast. Torres’ hold on second base is not secure, and Detroit could decide that Lee, Anderson, or even both, are the better long-term answers there.
If the Tigers do move on from Torres, it would not be viewed as a crushing loss. He’s a good player, but the organization has internal options that make the decision easier to swallow. There’s even the possibility of bringing in someone like Luis Arraez if the Tigers want another name in the mix at second.
Money matters too. Torres is expected to command a sizable contract, and that makes the math pretty straightforward for Detroit. With Lee and Anderson in the pipeline, letting Torres leave could be the cleaner path for the Tigers this offseason.

Luis Garca Jr.'s Next Yankees Decision Could Change How He's Viewed
Luis Garca Jr. arrived from the Nationals at the trade deadline and has mostly settled in at first base since joining the Yankees, but his long-term fit in pinstripes may depend on something a little less straightforward than where he has played most recently. Aaron Boone has already floated the idea of sending Garca back to second base in future seasons, a reminder that the Yankees are still thinking beyond this year when it comes to how they shape the infield.
The appeal is obvious for a club that likes keeping options open, especially with Giancarlo Stanton and Jazz Chisholm Jr. part of the broader roster conversation and their own situations carrying some uncertainty. For Garca, though, a return to second would reopen a chapter that has not always been smooth defensively, which makes the next decision more than a simple lineup tweak. It could end up helping define whether the Yankees see him as a flexible piece or something more specific. [Read more 🡒]
Yankees Mourn Loss Of Former Lefty With Remarkable MLB Legacy
Sam McDowell, one of the games most intimidating left-handers in his prime, has died at 84, according to the Cleveland Guardians. A six-time All-Star and five-time strikeout leader, McDowell built a reputation around a fastball that made him a handful for hitters throughout a 15-season major league career, one that included stops with Cleveland, the Giants, the Yankees and the Pirates.
For the Yankees, McDowell is a reminder of an era when a veteran arm could still leave a lasting imprint across multiple clubs. He finished with 141 wins and 2,453 strikeouts, then spent his postplaying years helping others as a Mental Health and Addiction Recovery Consultant and as a board member for the Baseball Assistance Team, giving his legacy a reach that went well beyond the mound. Yankees May Have A Desperate Aaron Judge Roster Path After Game 3
Max Fried is still lined up to take the ball for Game 3 of the American League Division Series even with his girlfriend due to give birth, underscoring how teams navigate family news and October pressure at the same time. Elsewhere in the postseason, the Padres showed the roster flexibility the paternity list can create by placing Mason Miller on it and bringing Wandy Peralta onto their NLDS roster temporarily.
For the Yankees, that wrinkle could become part of the conversation if they manage to get past Game 3 and determine Aaron Judge is healthy enough to return. New York has not committed to anything yet, but the possibility gives the club one more roster avenue to weigh as it tries to balance urgency, availability and the realities of a short postseason window.
