The Atlanta Braves have bolstered their pitching staff by claiming right-hander Osvaldo Bido off waivers from the New York Yankees. This move comes as the Braves place left-hander Joey Wentz on the 60-day IL due to a torn ACL, which will sideline him for the entire 2026 season.
This isn't the first time Bido has been in the Braves' sights. Atlanta initially picked him up from the A’s in December, kicking off a whirlwind of transactions that saw Bido bounce between several teams before landing with the Yankees. Now, he's back with the Braves, who are in dire need of innings.
Bido had a decent spring with the Yankees, pitching seven innings and allowing just one run on five hits and three walks. While he's been used in shorter stints recently, Bido has experience as both a starter and a swingman with the Pirates and Athletics.
Bido's journey began with seven seasons in the Pirates' system before making his MLB debut in 2023. His career has seen ups and downs, with a strong 2024 season sandwiched between struggles in 2023 and 2025. His career ERA sits at 5.07 over 193 2/3 innings, but advanced metrics like SIERA and FIP suggest he's been a bit better than that.
Armed with a fastball averaging 94.7 mph, Bido has a strikeout rate of 20.9% and a walk rate of 9.6%. Home runs have been a thorn in his side, particularly last season when pitching in the hitter-friendly Sutter Health Park, where he allowed 13 home runs in just 44 1/3 home innings.
The Braves have been hit hard by injuries in their rotation, with Wentz, Spencer Schwellenbach, Hurston Waldrep, and Spencer Strider all sidelined. As a result, Atlanta will start the season with Chris Sale, Reynaldo Lopez, and Grant Holmes in the rotation, despite each having their own injury concerns.
Bryce Elder and José Suarez, both out of minor league options, are expected to complete the rotation. Veteran Martín Pérez is also in the mix. Bido, like Elder and Suarez, is out of options, positioning him well to make the team in a swing role, providing much-needed depth for the Braves.
