The Blue Jays took a major hit Saturday, putting Vladimir Guerrero Jr. on the seven-day injured list with concussion symptoms after the first baseman was injured in Friday’s 3-1 win over the Yankees.
The scare came in the sixth inning during a messy play at third base. Rookie shortstop George Lombard Jr. tried to jump over Guerrero as the Blue Jays slugger slid into the bag, and Lombard’s knee and thigh caught Guerrero in the head, knocking off his helmet.
Guerrero got back on his feet and still managed to score the tying run, but he looked dazed after crossing the plate. Charles McAdoo took over at first base in the seventh inning.
After the game, manager John Schneider said Guerrero had “a little bit of a headache.” The symptoms were still there Saturday, which led Toronto to make the IL move.
It’s a tough loss for a Toronto lineup that can ill afford to be without one of its biggest bats, even briefly. Guerrero is hitting .263 with seven home runs and 46 RBIs this season.
Toronto moved quickly to fill the roster spot, selecting outfielder Daz Cameron from Triple-A Buffalo. To open room on the 40-man roster, the club designated right-hander Lazaro Estrada for assignment.
The Blue Jays also made another pitching shuffle Saturday, recalling left-hander Ricky Tiedemann from Buffalo and optioning right-hander Chase Lee to Triple-A.
Tiedemann has gone 0-1 with a 6.43 ERA in seven appearances, including two starts, across three minor league levels this season.
For now, the focus is on Guerrero’s recovery. There’s no exact return date beyond the required seven days on the concussion IL, and Toronto will keep monitoring his symptoms and progression before deciding when he’s ready to come back.
