The Yankees are making a prospect move for tonight’s game against the Astros, and it means a quick trip back to Triple-A for a recently added bullpen arm.
Elmer Rodriguez, New York’s No. 3 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, is set for his fifth start of the season in the middle game of the three-game series. To clear room on the active roster, the Yankees needed to option a pitcher, and that decision landed on Bradley Hanner.

Hanner came into the organization on a minor league deal during the offseason, and the Yankees selected his contract from Triple-A on Aug. 11. Since then, he’s worked three times out of the bullpen, giving up six hits and two home runs while striking out six over four innings.
Aaron Boone has leaned on Hanner to soak up innings during Rodriguez’s starts, but that usage may have made the decision easier. Hanner threw 25 pitches Tuesday against the Astros, which could have left him unavailable for the next few days.
The move also lines up with the Yankees’ current rotation picture. Ryan Weathers is on the IL with a left forearm flexor strain, and Boone has suggested the club may keep Rodriguez in the rotation for now.
There’s also a potential return looming. Max Fried, who is on the IL with a bone bruise in his throwing elbow, is a possible option for this weekend’s pivotal four-game series against the Boston Red Sox, according to Boone.
