A few years back, the New York Yankees found themselves in a tense situation with their star slugger, Aaron Judge. With free agency looming, there was a real possibility that Judge might pack his bags and leave the Bronx.
Thankfully for Yankees fans, Judge decided to stay put, and it looks like he’s set to continue what many believe will be a Hall of Fame career right where it started.
Reflecting on his free agency experience, Judge opened up to Kevin Durant on The Boardroom, sharing that while the process was "a blast," it was also "stressful."
Judge's Candid Take on Free Agency
"It was a blast," Judge admitted. "Veterans always say, 'Wait till free agency - you'll love it.'
It’s exciting to have the freedom to explore options and talk to different teams. But it was stressful.
You lose that safety net. You go from being a Yankee to a free agent, and suddenly it’s all on you."
His insights are both honest and relatable. Free agency offers players the chance to feel the love from teams across the league, and for someone like Judge, interest was high, particularly from the Yankees and the San Francisco Giants.
But it wasn’t all easy. Judge faced the uncertainty of being unsigned, without the comfort of an existing contract to fall back on.
This perspective is intriguing, especially considering a player of Judge's caliber would undoubtedly find a home somewhere. Yet, the lack of immediate security and the wait for a new deal can be nerve-wracking, as Judge highlighted.
Judge is building a legendary career, and it could have taken a different path. However, he chose to return to the Yankees.
While the free agency journey had its stressful moments, it was ultimately a "blast" for Judge. He got to explore his options across the league and still secured a massive $360 million deal to remain with the Yankees.
