The Rangers head to Columbus on Saturday night looking to keep a strong early-season stretch rolling against the Blue Jackets, with puck drop set for 7:00 PM ET on MSG Network and ESPN 880 AM.
New York enters the game tied for second in the league with six wins and tied for third with 12 points, while also sitting fourth with 2.33 goals against per game. The Blueshirts have combined size and discipline effectively so far, ranking second in the NHL with 254 hits and 145 blocked shots, and tying for third with 39 takeaways.
Special teams have been a major strength. The Rangers are 26-for-28 on the penalty kill, good for third in the league at 92.9 percent, and they are one of four teams that have been perfect on the road with the man disadvantage.
The defense has done plenty of damage in the other direction too. Rangers defensemen have piled up 18 assists this season, which ranks third in the NHL, and 20 points, tied for sixth.
Alexis Lafrenière has been the hottest Ranger of the bunch. He has points in six straight games, totaling seven goals and four assists in that span, matching the longest streak of his career and tying for the fifth-longest active run in the NHL. His seven goals are tied for third in the league, and he leads New York in both goals and points with 11.
Lafrenière’s October has already produced some big nights. On Oct. 13, he recorded his second multi-goal game of the season and his third multi-point game, which is tied for the most on the Rangers this year.
He also had his second career four-point game on Oct. 6 and his 58th career multi-point game on Oct. 13.
Since the 2022-23 season, his 51 multi-point games rank fifth among all Rangers skaters. For that stretch of play, he was also named the NHL’s Third Star of the Week for the week ending Oct.
Adam Fox is doing what Adam Fox does: controlling games from the back end and filling up the scoresheet. Through nine games, he has nine assists, making him the first Rangers defenseman with at least nine assists through the first nine games of a season since Brian Leetch in 2000-01. Among NHL defensemen, he is tied for second in assists and tied for third in points, while leading the Rangers in assists and ranking second in points.
Fox also keeps climbing the franchise record book. On Oct. 13, he had his 77th career multi-assist game as a Ranger, passing Ron Greschner for second among team defensemen and moving past Greschner for ninth among all Rangers skaters. Since 2019-20, Fox’s 77 multi-assist games rank third among NHL defensemen, and his 109 multi-point games are also third in that span.
Mika Zibanejad has kept the offense moving too, with eight points through nine games. He has six assists, second-most on the Rangers, and is third on the team in points. He is also just three points from tying Walt Tkaczuk for sixth-most in franchise history at 678.
Zibanejad’s recent work has included some milestone moments. On Oct. 13, he scored his 16th career shorthanded goal and 14th with New York, tying Don Maloney for fourth-most shorthanded goals in franchise history.
Among Swedish players, that total ties for sixth-most in NHL history. He also ranks fourth in the NHL in faceoff win percentage at 59.1 among players with at least 100 draws.
On Oct. 11, Zibanejad reached 287 career power play points and 250 as a Ranger, becoming only the third skater in team history to hit that mark, joining Brian Leetch and Rod Gilbert. That same game also brought his 174th career multi-point performance and 78th multi-assist game, moving him ahead of Artemi Panarin for sixth in Rangers history in multi-point games and past Walt Tkaczuk for seventh in multi-assist games.
J.T. Miller has been steady as well, recording a point in five of his last six games with one goal and five assists.
He ranks third on the Rangers with five assists and is tied for fourth with six points. In the faceoff circle, he sits eighth in the NHL at 57.8 percent among players with at least 100 draws this season, and since the 2024-25 season his 59.6 faceoff win percentage ranks third among skaters with at least 1,000 faceoffs taken.
In goal, Dylan Garand has given the Rangers a lift early. He has won three of his four starts this season and has points in six of his seven career NHL starts, going 5-1-1. On Oct. 13, he matched Igor Shesterkin and Cam Talbot for the fewest starts by a Rangers goaltender to five career wins, needing just six starts to get there.
Garand’s start to the year has already included some notable firsts. On Oct. 11, he became the eighth rookie netminder in team history to win each of his first two starts of a season, and the third to do it in the last 40 years, following Igor Shesterkin in 2019-20.
He is also the first rookie goalie in Rangers history to earn at least one point in each of his first four NHL games since Henrik Lundqvist in 2005-06. On Oct. 2, he recorded his first career shutout, making 22 saves in the process, which was the most by a Rangers rookie goalie in a shutout since Igor Shesterkin stopped 27 on Apr.
13, 2021.
There’s also no shortage of familiar faces in the matchup. Rangers forward Oliver Bjorkstrand was originally selected by the Blue Jackets in the third round, 89th overall, of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, and in seven seasons with Columbus he put up 234 points, including 111 goals and 123 assists, in 382 games. Rangers defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov was drafted by Columbus in the sixth round, 159th overall, of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, and recorded 73 points with the Blue Jackets across parts of his first four seasons.
On the Columbus side, defenseman Carson Soucy spent parts of two seasons with New York, in 2024-25 and 2025-26, and posted 11 points in 62 games for the Rangers. Blue Jackets goaltender Cam Talbot also has a Rangers past, spending two seasons in New York from 2013-14 through 2014-15 and going 33-15-5 with a .931 save percentage and a 2.00 goals against average in 57 games, 53 of them starts. Columbus director of player personnel and development Rick Nash spent parts of six seasons with the Rangers from 2012-13 through 2017-18.

Rangers May Have A New Goaltending Question After Brutal OT Loss
The Rangers got a needed point out of a 1-0 overtime loss to the Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena, but the bigger takeaway may have been the way Dylan Garand handled the net. Called into a tough spot, Garand looked steady throughout the night, stopping 28 of 29 shots and helping the Rangers survive on penalty kills for long stretches as the road struggles continued and the club slipped to 1-3-1 away from home.
Dylan Garand's performance also adds another layer to the goaltending picture for a team still trying to settle things down in goal. New York did not get the result it wanted, but it did get a glimpse of a young netminder who was forced to carry a heavy load in a tight, low-scoring game, and the way he responded should keep the conversation going as the Rangers look for stability on the road. Rangers Could Trigger The Goalie Domino That Reshapes This Market
Connor Hellebuycks suspension is nearly over, and the Jets ongoing interest in moving him has already started to ripple through the goalie market. The Rangers are not considered a fit to acquire Hellebuyck directly because of his salary, but their goalie situation could still matter here if they decide to make a separate move that helps loosen the entire landscape. Around the league, clubs such as the Kings and Hurricanes have also been linked to Hellebuyck, which only adds to the sense that one move could set off several others.
For the Rangers, the bigger question is whether they choose to act before the market tightens further. If they do, they could end up shaping where Hellebuyck lands without ever entering that bidding themselves, and that is the kind of indirect leverage teams look for when a top goalie becomes available. Nothing has been finalized yet, but with multiple teams circling and Winnipeg still exploring options, New Yorks next step could wind up carrying more weight than it first appears. [Read more 🡒]
Rangers Just Got Another Reminder About Jaroslav Chmelar
Jaroslav Chmelars latest turn with the Rangers did not produce a point, and his ice time was limited across seven games in New York. Back in Hartford with the Wolf Pack, though, the winger has at least given the organization a reminder of why it remains interested in his development, scoring a goal in a recent game while leading the team with six shots on goal.
The Rangers have now sent Chmelar back to Hartford to keep building his game and confidence, while veteran Taylor Raddysh has been recalled to fill the NHL roster spot. For Chmelar, the path is still about translating flashes in the AHL into something more consistent at the top level, and the organization will be watching closely to see how he responds after another reset.
