The Connor Hellebuyck situation is still hanging out there, but Elliotte Friedman thinks one team in particular may be waiting to pounce: the Utah Mammoth.
On the 32 Thoughts Podcast, Friedman said he believes Utah is determined to land the Winnipeg Jets goaltender, and he pointed to the way the organization has chased targets before. Utah, he said, has a habit of sticking with a player until it gets its man.
“If they want something, like you look at Vincent Trocheck, they wanted Trocheck for a year at least, and finally got him,” Friedman said. He also said Utah has been in and out of the Hellebuyck discussion, which signals real interest. “Now that it’s real, I just want to see if they’re a factor at the end of all this.”
Friedman identified a few teams as possible drivers in the goalie market. Buffalo has wanted Hellebuyck for some time, and Friedman said the goalie is willing to go there.
The Rangers are another part of the puzzle, though not because they want Hellebuyck themselves. Friedman said the Igor Shesterkin injury could trigger movement around the league depending on what Chris Drury does.
Utah’s place in the mix makes sense to Friedman because of where the team is headed. He described them as a good young team moving toward becoming a regular playoff contender. If a deal takes shape, he suggested Karel Vejmelka could be moved to the Rangers to fill the hole left by Shesterkin, which would then create room for Utah to bring in Hellebuyck.
There is a complication with Vejmelka’s deal, since he is signed through 2030, but Friedman said the $4.75 million hit is not a huge burden for New York, even once Shesterkin returns.
The timing also matters here. Hellebuyck’s suspension ends Friday, and Friedman said if the Jets cannot move him by then, they will pay him to stay home.
That would be expensive, but Friedman made clear Winnipeg is not going to force the issue. The team will wait for the right offer, and that could become more realistic if Hellebuyck is back in the lineup.
Friedman said Los Angeles does not appear to be a fit right now, while Carolina remains in the picture. Utah has talked with the Jets, but nothing has advanced far because of the uncertainty around Hellebuyck’s status and what he intends to do.
Chris Johnston added another layer to the concern, saying scouts have questions about which version of Hellebuyck a team would be getting. “You don’t really know what he’s doing,” he said.

Rangers Take A Low-Risk Look At A Veteran Center
The Rangers have added a little more veteran presence to camp with Luke Glendening joining on a professional tryout agreement, giving the team a chance to take a longer look at a proven center without making a commitment. It is a familiar kind of move for this stage of the calendar, especially for a player like Glendening, who has carved out a long NHL career across multiple teams and brings nearly 1,000 games of experience into the conversation.
For Glendening, it is also another swing at finding a landing spot after he was in Tampa Bays camp on a PTO and came away without a contract. With New York, the arrangement keeps the door open for both sides, and it gives the Rangers a low-risk look at a player who can help shape the bottom of the lineup while the team sorts through its options. Rangers Already Have An Oliver Bjorkstrand Problem They Didnt Expect
Oliver Bjorkstrand arrived on a one-year deal with the expectation that he could help give the Rangers another legitimate scoring option in the middle of the lineup. Instead, his role has slipped as the season has unfolded, with the rise of players such as Tye Kartye and Alexis Lafrenire pushing him further down the depth chart than anyone likely anticipated when the contract was signed.
Now the fit looks less settled than the Rangers probably wanted, especially as they juggle cap considerations and try to keep roster space flexible. Bjorkstrands place in the lineup has become one of those quiet but meaningful questions around the team, and it is no surprise that his name has surfaced as a possible trade piece if New York decides it needs to reshape the bottom of the roster. Rangers Are Suddenly In The Middle Of A Goalie Market Twist
The Rangers have spent time looking hard at the goalie market, and the names connected to that search tell the story of a team keeping its options open. New York has scouted Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Karel Vejmelka, while insider Elliotte Friedman reported that Rangers goalie scout Scott Clemmensen has also been evaluating other possibilities, including Ville Husso, as the club continues to search for help in net.
What makes the situation more interesting is that the Rangers may wind up affecting a much bigger move without being the team that makes it directly. The goalie market could still be shaped by a Connor Hellebuyck chain reaction, and New York might end up serving as the trigger for that domino effect rather than the final destination. For a team still sorting out its goaltending picture, it is the kind of twist that can change the board quickly. [Read more 🡒]
