The New York Rangers made a notable roster move ahead of their matchup with the Dallas Stars, recalling forward Brennan Othmann from AHL affiliate Hartford. The decision comes as the team faces potential depth issues up front, with two forwards potentially unavailable for tonight’s game.
Taylor Raddysh was absent from practice yesterday due to what the team labeled “personal reasons,” while Adam Edström left the ice early and is currently being evaluated for a lower-body injury. That leaves the Rangers thin at forward, and Othmann’s recall gives them a little breathing room - and maybe a spark.
Let’s talk about Othmann. The 20-year-old winger has been working to find his footing in the AHL this season, and while the offensive production hasn’t jumped off the page - one goal and six assists through 15 games - he did finally break through with his first goal of the season just before Thanksgiving, adding an assist in that same game. That’s the kind of performance that can build confidence, and now he’s being thrown into the NHL mix.
Make no mistake: this call-up is driven more by necessity than merit at this stage. But that doesn’t mean it’s not a real opportunity.
Othmann’s still considered one of the organization’s more intriguing young pieces, but the clock is ticking. The Rangers are in win-now mode, and spots in the lineup aren’t handed out lightly.
If he gets into the lineup tonight, even in a limited role, it’s a chance to show he can contribute at the NHL level - not just in flashes, but consistently.
On the goaltending front, there’s a bit of positive news. Jonathan Quick was a full participant in the team’s skate and is now eligible to come off injured reserve whenever he’s ready. Until then, Spencer Martin remains with the club as the backup.
So the Rangers head into tonight’s game with some uncertainty, but also a little intrigue. With Edström likely out and Raddysh’s status up in the air, Othmann could get his shot. And for a young player still trying to carve out his NHL identity, that’s all he can ask for.
