With the playoff race heating up, the New York Rangers faced off against the Montreal Canadiens at Madison Square Garden. Both teams were riding winning streaks, with Montreal on a six-game tear and the Rangers victorious in their last three. The lineup saw minimal changes, with Jonny Brodzinski moving up a line and Jonathan Quick backing up Igor Shesterkin.
Pre-Game Ceremony
Before the puck dropped, the Rangers honored their captain, J.T. Miller, with the prestigious Rod Gilbert “Mr.
Ranger” Award. Adam Graves and Judy Gilbert, Rod Gilbert's widow, took part in the ceremony, adding a touch of nostalgia and pride to the night.
First Period
The opening frame was a chess match, with neither team giving an inch. The Rangers had a golden opportunity when Vladislav Gavrikov drew a double minor after taking a high stick from Juraj Slafkovsky. Despite controlling the puck in Montreal’s zone and a near-miss from Will Cuylle that clanged off the crossbar, the Rangers couldn't capitalize.
Montreal got their chance when Noah Laba was called for hooking, but the Rangers' penalty kill stood tall. The period ended scoreless, with the Rangers outshooting Montreal 8-7, thanks to efforts from Cuylle, Vincent Trocheck, and Conor Sheary.
Second Period
The Canadiens came out firing in the second, testing Shesterkin early. A turnover by Sheary led to Alex Newhook finding the back of the net, putting Montreal up 1-0. The momentum shifted further when Arber Xhekaj set up Cole Caufield, who notched his 48th goal with a pinpoint shot.
The Rangers struggled to find their rhythm, even as they killed off a penalty for high sticking. A too-many-men penalty gave them a chance to regroup, but Montreal’s Jake Evans nearly extended the lead with a shorthanded breakaway. The period closed with the Rangers trailing 2-0 and being outshot 19-12, despite leading in high-danger chances.
Third Period
The Rangers finally found their spark midway through the third. Alexis Lafrenière's effort from the point led to a scramble, and Adam Fox pounced on the rebound to make it 2-1. The Garden roared back to life.
Minutes later, Brodzinski's rush resulted in a goal from Cuylle, marking his 100th career point. Montreal considered challenging but decided against it, leaving the game tied 2-2.
However, Caufield wasn't done. With blistering speed, he netted his 49th goal, slipping one past Shesterkin to reclaim the lead for Montreal.
In a last-ditch effort, the Rangers pulled Shesterkin for an extra attacker, but Montreal held firm. The Canadiens extended their winning streak to seven games, edging out the Rangers with a 3-2 victory. Shots on goal were close, with Montreal leading 25-23.
Looking Ahead
The Rangers will look to bounce back as they prepare to host the Detroit Red Wings in another classic Original Six showdown. With playoff implications on the line, every game counts as the season winds down.
