The Rangers are making another round of lineup changes, and this one comes with a clear message about where the organization wants to go next.
On Monday, New York reshuffled its forward group at practice, with Will Cuylle moving down the middle to take over as the third-line center. That adjustment created a vacancy on the wing, and the front office filled it by sending Taylor Raddysh back to the Hartford Wolf Pack while recalling Jaroslav Chmelař.

It’s a quick swing for Chmelař, but the Rangers are clearly betting that another run in the AHL helped reset him. The 23-year-old winger has already shown he can be more than just a big body, and New York is hoping that version shows up again at the NHL level.
Chmelař’s October was rough. He played just under 57 minutes at 5v5 over seven games and didn’t record a point. The possession and chance numbers were ugly too, with a 0 GF%, a 44.65 CF%, and a 32.25 xGF% per Evolving-Hockey.
That was a sharp drop from what he did last season, when he appeared in 29 games and posted a 53.68 xGF%, a 48.31 CF%, and four goals in limited fourth-line minutes at 9:09 per night.
At 6'5" and 238 pounds, Chmelař brings a rare mix of size and mobility. When he’s right, he’s a problem on the forecheck, forcing mistakes and pressuring opponents into coughing up the puck before he even has to land the hit.
Back in Hartford, he found his rhythm again. In seven games with the Wolf Pack, he produced two goals and two assists for four points and finished plus-3.

His AHL track record has moved in the right direction over the past two seasons as well. In 2024-25, Chmelař put up 29 points, including 12 goals and 17 assists, in 71 games, though he was minus-37.
Last season, he had 25 points in 46 games and trimmed that number to minus-7. Plus-minus can only tell you so much, but a 30-point swing in that category is hard to ignore when you’re evaluating an AHL player without a lot of public tracking data.
Raddysh, meanwhile, did nothing wrong in his latest NHL stint. In just over 45 minutes at 5v5, he posted a 76.08 GF%, a 57.96 CF%, and a 61.73 xGF%. He also chipped in an assist, three shots on goal, three blocks, and three hits.
Still, the decision makes sense when you zoom out. Raddysh is in the final year of his contract and doesn’t fit into the Rangers’ long-term picture.
He was the right call for the moment, especially while playing well in Hartford, but New York needs younger players to start taking hold. Chmelař has a real chance to become part of the team’s fourth-line identity going forward.
There’s also a natural fit waiting for him. Monday’s practice alignment pushed Noah Laba down to the fourth line after Cuylle moved into the third-line center role, and that could actually help Laba settle in. He has had a tough start to the season, and the move takes some of the pressure off.
Pairing Laba with Chmelař could give the Rangers something useful. Chmelař’s forechecking and work along the boards complement Laba’s straight-line speed, giving the rookie a winger who can win pucks and create space. If Chmelař brings his AHL edge with him, the Rangers may finally have the kind of hard-nosed fourth line Mike Sullivan has been looking for.

Adam Edstrm Is Making The Rangers Regret This One
Adam Edstrms move out of New York looked like a fairly routine depth shuffle at the time, the kind of transaction that barely registers once the roster churn settles. But after the Rangers sent him to Nashville, the big forward quickly found a more defined role with the Predators and has started to show the blend of size and finishing ability that made him an intriguing piece in the first place.
In Nashville, Edstrm has been getting more ice time and the results have followed, with five goals and an assist in 14 games along with strong underlying numbers. It has only sharpened the contrast with how he was viewed in New York, where former head coach Mike Sullivan publicly questioned his consistency while Edstrm was working back from injuries, leaving the Rangers with a familiar what-if as his game starts to click elsewhere. Rangers Make Another Forward Shuffle With One Roster Spot In Focus
The Rangers continued their forward juggling act by recalling Jaroslav Chmelar from AHL Hartford and sending Taylor Raddysh back the other way, another small but telling move as the club keeps sorting through its depth options. Chmelar has already gotten into seven NHL games this season, while Raddysh has had a brief run with the big club after his latest recall, and both have been productive enough in Hartford to stay in the conversation.
For the Rangers, the timing matters as much as the transaction itself. Chmelar is back in the mix after his earlier look at the NHL level, and Raddyshs status gives the team something to weigh as it manages its roster spot and decides who best fits the next stretch of games. The shuffle leaves one opening worth watching, especially with both forwards still trying to turn their AHL production into a steadier role in New York. [Read more 🡒]
Rangers Face An Early Season Test They Can't Afford To Fail
The Rangers are trying to steady themselves after a rough stretch that has left them searching for traction early in the season. Recent play has put them in a difficult spot in the Metropolitan Division and the Eastern Conference, and the next few days offer a chance to start changing the conversation before the schedule gets tougher again.
Home games against the Blues and Flyers now loom as an important reset before the club heads out on its first major road trip of the season. With Pavel Dorofeyev and Dylan Garand drawing attention for their recent performances, the Rangers have at least a few individual bright spots to lean on, but the bigger question is whether those can translate into the kind of team results they need right away.
