Mike Sullivan’s first practice look at the New York Rangers came with a new set of forward combinations, but the blue line stayed exactly where it has been all season.
The defense pairs remained unchanged: Vlad Gavrikov with Adam Fox, Marcus Pettersson with Sean Durzi, and Alberts Smits with Braden Schneider. That decision stands out because, as the source material notes, teams have been going after that third pair, while the second pair has been sinking with its minutes. If the pairs aren’t going to change, then the usage needs to.
On the forward side, Gabe Perreault was moved down to the third line with Will Cuylle and Noah Laba. Pavel Dorofeyev slid into Perreault’s old spot next to Mika Zibanejad and Alexis Lafreniere, while Tye Kartye remained on the second line. The updated look, as posted in the source, was:
Dorofeyev-Zibanejad-Lafreniere
Kartye-Miller-Bjorkstrand
Cuylle-Laba-Perreault
Raddysh-Glendening-Rempe
Gavrikov-Fox
Pettersson-Durzi
Smits-Schneider
Morrow the extra
Eeli Tolvanen was out as a non-participant because of personal reasons, but the expectation is that he would slide into Matt Rempe’s spot on the fourth line.
What matters most, though, is how those lines are deployed. Cuylle and Laba had been taking most of the defensive-zone starts as a shutdown-looking third unit, which doesn’t really match Perreault’s game.
That makes the zone split the key question now: the third line needs more offensive-zone work, ideally with the JT Miller line handling more of a hybrid assignment. The fourth line still doesn’t have a clear role, although Tolvanen could help it tilt toward a little more offense.

J.T. Miller's Halloween Moment Says A Lot About These Rangers
The Rangers got a lighter moment at just the right time when J.T. Miller showed up at the teams annual Halloween party dressed as Tinker Bell, a reminder that even in a tense season, there is still room for a little levity. The event brought players and their families together, giving the group a chance to step away from the rink and spend time in a setting that looked more like a neighborhood gathering than a hockey operation.
For a club trying to steady itself during a challenging stretch, that kind of scene can matter. The Rangers have been using the break in the schedule to reset before returning to game action, and moments like this can help keep the room loose while the pressure builds again. Millers costume might have been the headline grabber, but the bigger takeaway is the sense that this group is still looking for ways to stay connected while it works through an uneven start. Former Rangers Flop Is Suddenly Raising An Uncomfortable Question In Toronto
Jack Roslovic was a deadline addition for the Rangers last season, but his time in New York never really caught fire. He had a modest impact after arriving ahead of the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline and was eventually pushed down to the fourth line during the playoffs, a reminder that the fit never quite matched the hope attached to the move.
Now in Toronto on a two-year deal, Roslovic has flipped the script in a way that has to make the Rangers look twice. He has settled in on the Maple Leafs' top line and has produced enough offense to sit near the top of the team leaderboard, with coach Jim Hiller pointing to his chemistry with Auston Matthews as the reason the change has taken hold. Rangers Suddenly Face An Uncomfortable Truth After Shesterkin Injury
Igor Shesterkins season-ending knee injury has forced a difficult recalibration around the Rangers, and Marty Biron thinks the bigger ripple in the Metropolitan Division may be happening elsewhere. On the Rink Rap podcast, Biron pointed to the New Jersey Devils addition of Connor Hellebuyck as the move with the larger effect on the playoff picture, while noting the Rangers were already viewed as a fringe contender before their star goalie went down.
Even so, there is still a practical path forward in New York if the backup situation holds up. Biron said he feels good about the Rangers current options in net, but also suggested the front office could still look around for help if needed, with an eye on a goalie carrying an expiring contract.
