The New York Rangers are doing their homework in the goalie market, and Elliotte Friedman says two names have already come up on the radar: Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Karel Vejmelka.
On the latest edition of the 32 Thoughts Podcast, Friedman said, “Vejmelka and Luukkonen are two of the guys they’ve scouted.”
That doesn’t sound like a one-name search, either. Friedman’s comments suggest Rangers goalie scout Scott Clemmensen has been out on the road looking at more than just those two options. Friedman also brought up a trip to Calgary last week, when Anaheim was in town.
“I heard he was in Calgary last week when Anaheim was there. So, he was maybe looking at (Ville Husso), but the Ducks don’t have a lot of depth in goal. So, I don’t know if I see that.”
Husso could fit as a third-string option behind Dylan Garand and eventually Joonas Korpisalo, but Friedman made it clear that was far from certain. He also said Clemmensen may have been checking out an AHL game in Calgary as part of the trip.
Taken together, the picture is pretty simple: the Rangers are working through their options and making sure they know what’s out there.
Friedman also said New York could become a major player in a Connor Hellebuyck deal, though not because the Rangers are expected to land the Winnipeg Jets goalie themselves. Instead, he pointed to a separate move that could ripple through the market.
“Whatever Chris Drury is going to do here with the injury to Shesterkin, it could set a chain reaction around the league.”
One possibility Friedman floated was a Rangers look at Vejmelka, especially with Utah mentioned as a frontrunner for Hellebuyck. In that scenario, a Vejmelka deal could help trigger the kind of chain reaction Friedman described.
If that happens, Utah would have motivation to move quickly. The Rangers, though, don’t appear pressed to rush anything. Dylan Garand bounced back from his rough outing against the New Jersey Devils with a 28-save effort in a 1-0 overtime loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets.
So for now, Chris Drury and the Rangers can afford to wait and keep gathering information. The real question is whether another team’s urgency, Utah included, ends up forcing the market to move.

Rangers Take A Low-Risk Look At A Veteran Center
The Rangers have added a little more veteran presence to camp with Luke Glendening joining on a professional tryout agreement, giving the team a chance to take a longer look at a proven center without making a commitment. It is a familiar kind of move for this stage of the calendar, especially for a player like Glendening, who has carved out a long NHL career across multiple teams and brings nearly 1,000 games of experience into the conversation.
For Glendening, it is also another swing at finding a landing spot after he was in Tampa Bays camp on a PTO and came away without a contract. With New York, the arrangement keeps the door open for both sides, and it gives the Rangers a low-risk look at a player who can help shape the bottom of the lineup while the team sorts through its options. Rangers Already Have An Oliver Bjorkstrand Problem They Didnt Expect
Oliver Bjorkstrand arrived on a one-year deal with the expectation that he could help give the Rangers another legitimate scoring option in the middle of the lineup. Instead, his role has slipped as the season has unfolded, with the rise of players such as Tye Kartye and Alexis Lafrenire pushing him further down the depth chart than anyone likely anticipated when the contract was signed.
Now the fit looks less settled than the Rangers probably wanted, especially as they juggle cap considerations and try to keep roster space flexible. Bjorkstrands place in the lineup has become one of those quiet but meaningful questions around the team, and it is no surprise that his name has surfaced as a possible trade piece if New York decides it needs to reshape the bottom of the roster. Rangers Suddenly Loom In A Goalie Domino Effect Around Shesterkin
The goalie market has started to take on a domino effect feel, and the Rangers are right in the middle of it. Elliotte Friedman raised the possibility of the Utah Mammoth pursuing Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, pointing to Utahs track record of going after specific targets, while Buffalo and the Rangers are also being mentioned as clubs with interest. Around the league, the ripple effect is being tied to other roster decisions and the broader uncertainty that comes with trying to line up a trade for a high-profile goalie.
For the Rangers, it is another reminder that the market around Igor Shesterkin is not operating in a vacuum. Hellebuycks situation has plenty of moving parts, from the Jets willingness to deal him to questions about how teams evaluate his recent form and what he intends to do next. If Winnipeg cannot find the right deal, the situation could linger into the end of the week, keeping a lot of clubs, including the Rangers, in wait-and-see mode. [Read more 🡒]
