The Rangers’ season is barely underway, and they’re already dealing with a goalie shuffle.
New York placed Joonas Korpisalo on injured reserve Thursday and brought up Dylan Garand from AHL Hartford in the corresponding move. Korpisalo is being described as week-to-week with a lower-body injury.

What makes the situation even murkier is that Korpisalo hasn’t played a game yet this season, and it’s still not clear when or how the injury happened. The Rangers practiced Wednesday, but there were no reports of anyone dealing with a problem. From what was visible at the opening-night game in Boston on Tuesday, nothing in warmups appeared to be an issue either.
Thursday morning’s optional skate was mostly limited to the extra skaters. Igor Shesterkin is starting in goal for the Rangers tonight.
It's a (very) optional morning skate today. Alberts Smits, Matt Rempe and the three scratched players Tuesday -- Chmelar, Robertson and Morrow -- are the only ones skating.

The timing matters because the Rangers are set to face the Tampa Bay Lightning in their home opener Thursday night, then turn right around for a trip to Michigan to play the Detroit Red Wings on Friday. That second game could be a spot where Garand gets the nod.

Rangers Linked To Alexander Nikishin As Bigger Trade Questions Build
Alexander Nikishin has become one of the more interesting names to watch as the trade market starts to take shape around the league, and the Rangers were in the picture once before. Reports say a deal involving Nikishin and New York was explored around the 2026 NHL draft, though it never came together, leaving the defenseman still in Carolina and still looking like a player with a clear market.
The intrigue is only growing now because Nikishin is said to want a change of scenery for more ice time and responsibility, while the Hurricanes have also been working through bigger roster questions of their own. One recent thread has them considering how to use acquired assets in a possible move with the Winnipeg Jets for Connor Hellebuyck, which only adds to the sense that Nikishin could end up part of a much larger shuffle if the right deal emerges. Rangers Need A Different Madison Square Garden This Time
Mike Sullivan did not spend much time looking backward when the Rangers opened the conversation around their home-ice issues from last season. He framed it as a reset, with a new season and a new group, while Adam Fox and Mika Zibanejad both sounded optimistic about the clubs chances to defend Madison Square Garden more effectively this time around.
The timing matters, too, because the Rangers do not get much of a warm-up before the home opener against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday. With a busy early schedule ahead, New York is hoping that a better start in its own building can help establish some momentum quickly, especially after a year in which the Garden was too often an advantage in name only. Rangers Defense Prospect Left Fans One Big Question After Debut
Alberts mits first night in the NHL gave the Rangers a little bit of everything they expected from a young defense prospect stepping into the league for the first time. In his debut, he logged 16:54 of ice time and chipped in with a block, two hits and two giveaways, the kind of line that reflects both the work and the growing pains that usually come with an opening-game look.
mits admitted he made some mistakes, but his focus afterward was on learning from them and getting better. Mike Sullivan saw the same early adjustment on the bench, noting that the pace initially came at him fast before he settled in more as the game went on, while also pointing to the defensive tools that make mits such an interesting part of the Rangers future.
